"We had an awesome family day at this museum! Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable, and the exhibits were so impactful—I was especially impressed by the focus on representation. I'd definitely recommend bringing your favorite food and setting aside extra time to enjoy it all with your family."

"Old Fort Niagara is a reconstructed fort of one that was there many years ago. There is one original building that is still standing. When you enter the building, there is a small museum that tells the history about the fort and what it was used for. There is a fee to enter the actual park for parking before you get to the fort itself and there is a fee for the fort but you do get the parking fee deducted as long as you show them your receipt. There are signs telling you which way to go to get to the fort from the entrance fee station. Once you get to the fort, there are many buildings to check out. We saw a couple of demonstrations while we were visiting the fort and the guides were very polite and helpful. It’s on the edge of the Niagara River which flows into Lake Ontario and you are able to view both of them from the fort."

"I went with my two teenage kids. We had a great time we were brought back to the 17th and 1800s in between the French and the colonials. We watched the musket demonstration we watched the drum demonstration and we watched the Canon bomb demonstration. All we're done well. We were here for about 2 hours and enjoyed every minute of it. Like seeing the history and the photos and just feeling the energy of the past was amazing. I would definitely recommend going here if you're visiting."

A Rich Tapestry of History
Originally built by the French in 1726 as Fort Denonville, it was later renamed Fort Niagara. The British captured it in 1759, and it remained under British control until after the American Revolution, though the US didn't fully occupy it until 1796. During the War of 1812, it was a key objective for both American and British forces.
Today, Old Fort Niagara is a meticulously reconstructed historical site. While the French Castle is the only original building remaining, the other structures have been recreated to accurately represent different periods of occupation. This allows visitors to step back in time and experience the fort as it was during these significant historical eras.
Experiencing the Past: Reenactments and Demonstrations
Visitors can expect to see demonstrations of musket firing, where interpreters explain and fire historical firearms, providing a loud and exciting glimpse into 18th-century warfare. There are also often drum demonstrations and, at times, cannon firings, which are particularly impressive and educational. These live presentations offer a visceral understanding of the challenges and realities faced by those who lived and fought at the fort.
These events are not just for show; they are educational opportunities. The reenactors are typically very knowledgeable and happy to answer questions, sharing niche details about military life, uniforms, and weaponry. Checking the fort's schedule in advance is highly recommended to ensure you don't miss these captivating historical performances.
The Strategic Importance of Fort Niagara
During the colonial period, control of this fort meant control of the lucrative fur trade and the ability to project power across a vast territory. This made it a highly coveted prize for the French, British, and later, the Americans. The fort changed hands multiple times through conquest and treaty, reflecting its immense geopolitical value.
Even today, the site offers stunning views that highlight its historical significance. Standing on the ramparts, one can easily imagine the strategic advantage this location provided, overlooking the vital waterways that shaped the continent's history.
