For incredible valley views, hike an extra 0.8 miles past the Upper Falls overlook. Reddit

The Mist Trail is our family’s favorite hike in Yosemite. This trail can take you to the top of Vernal Falls, Nevada Falls, or all the way to the top of Half Dome. You’ll find an excellent view of Vernal Fall from the footbridge just 0.75 miles from the trailhead. And bonus, this section is paved, although steeper than I’d want to push up a stroller 🥵 the top of the Mist Trail is another 0.5 mile ...

What Travellers Say

Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the Yosemite Falls Trails for their stunning natural beauty and rewarding experiences. The Upper Falls Trail is lauded for its challenging climb and breathtaking summit views, while the Lower Falls Trail is appreciated for its accessibility and powerful close-up encounter with the water. Some reviewers note the strenuous nature of the Upper Trail and the potential for reduced water flow in drier seasons.

"Upper Yosemite Falls was one of the best hikes of my life. The beginning and end are challenging, but worth it. There’s a section in the middle that’s relatively flat, which has some of the best views of the falls. There are small trails that branch off for the best views.

I recommend going as early as possible in the morning because it gets very warm later on in the day. Nearly all of the second half of the hike is exposed to the sun by the later morning hours. I also recommend bringing plenty of water, especially if you’re not as experienced and if you’re planning on going later in the day.

I read some reviews recommending that people hike a further 0.8 miles past the falls to Yosemite Point. This was absolutely worth it, rewarding hikers with views of the entire valley and Half Dome."

"Very nice trail and beautiful falls"

"One of the most beautiful trails in Yosemite National Park. I've hiked it twice now and will do it again. Unfortunately, there was hardly any water at this time (August), and the beautiful waterfall was not visible. So, the best time is spring. I hike a lot and would rate the difficulty as moderate to difficult. It's about 1,000 meters in elevation gain from the valley floor. Including breaks, the hike takes about 4-5 hours. The view is magnificent, and the climb is truly worth it! Definitely give it a try. Please wear sturdy shoes and bring water!"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Navigating the Yosemite Falls Trails

Yosemite National Park boasts two primary trails associated with Yosemite Falls: the Lower Yosemite Falls Trail and the Upper Yosemite Falls Trail. The Lower Yosemite Falls Trail is a short, paved, and accessible loop, making it a popular choice for families and those seeking a less strenuous experience. It leads directly to the base of the lower section of the falls, offering a powerful, up-close encounter with the cascading water and its refreshing mist. TikTokInstagram

The Upper Yosemite Falls Trail, on the other hand, is a demanding, strenuous hike that ascends over 2,700 feet to the very top of North America's tallest waterfall. This trail is not for the faint of heart, featuring steep switchbacks and exposed sections. Hikers are rewarded with unparalleled panoramic views of Yosemite Valley, Half Dome, and, of course, the thundering spectacle of the falls from above. TikTokInstagram

Many visitors opt to hike both trails to experience the falls from different perspectives. It's crucial to understand the distinct challenges and rewards each trail offers before planning your visit. Instagram

Best Times to Experience Yosemite Falls

The most dramatic and awe-inspiring time to visit Yosemite Falls is during the spring months, typically from April to June. This is when snowmelt is at its peak, causing the falls to roar with incredible volume and power. Many TikTok and Instagram videos showcase this spectacular flow. TikTok+1

While spring offers the most water, visiting in early summer (July) can still provide a good experience, though the flow may be reduced. By late summer and fall, the falls can sometimes dwindle to a trickle or even dry up completely, especially during drought years. Reddit

Beyond the season, time of day is critical. For the Upper Yosemite Falls Trail, starting very early in the morning is highly recommended. This strategy helps you avoid the intense midday sun, which can make the exposed trail feel much hotter, and also allows you to bypass the largest crowds. TikTokReddit

Essential Gear and Safety for Hikers

When tackling the Upper Yosemite Falls Trail, proper gear is non-negotiable. Sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support are essential due to the steep, rocky, and uneven terrain. Reddit Many hikers also recommend trekking poles to help with stability on the ascents and descents. TikTok

Hydration is paramount. The Upper Falls Trail is largely exposed to the sun, and temperatures can soar. Carry significantly more water than you think you'll need, and consider a water filter or purification tablets as a backup, as there are natural seeps along the trail. Reddit Sun protection, including sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses, is also vital.

For safety, always hike with a companion if possible, inform someone of your hiking plans, and be aware of your surroundings. The trail can be challenging, and unexpected weather can occur. Heeding warnings and knowing your limits will ensure a safer and more enjoyable experience. TikTok+1
