Reviews Summary

Nubble Lighthouse is widely praised for its picturesque beauty and iconic status, offering stunning coastal views. Visitors appreciate the free access and the opportunity for photography, though parking can be challenging during peak times. While direct access to the lighthouse is not possible, the scenic overlooks and nearby amenities like ice cream and dining enhance the experience.

"The Nubble Light House, or Cape Neddick Light Station, is lovely and is a worthy subject for painters and photographers.
Visitors can scramble down rocks as they approach the water's edge at the narrow channel separating the coast from the rocky outcropping upon which the lighthouse stands.

A light-duty cable and pulley system spanned the water to the lighthouse, once used to send small supplies over. There is no tourist access to the lighthouse or the tiny patch of rock upon which it stands.
The road approaching the small visitor's parking lot passes through a residential area, ending in a small parking lot that is entirely insufficient for the formidable volume of summer traffic, especially on favorable weather days.

Is it worth it? Absolutely, yes. Sit on the rock or benches and take in the view while considering how many times this blinking red light has guided sailors past the "Savage Rock" on the coast of Maine.

When you leave, stop for an ice cream - follow the signs at the bottom of the parking lot for directions. You can thank me later."

"Beautiful but not accessible. Could only enjoy the scenic view from the car park. Traffic flow is pretty quick and so parking will be available after a short wait. Not crowded at all."

"The Nubble lighthouse9-6-25
This Nubble lighthouse is beautiful. The surrounding water and land that it sits on is just spectacular. This light house was built in 1897 and it looks like it was just put-up last week. It is in very good shape for its age. You cannot walk up to the Lighthouse as it sits on a small island. You get a very good view from the surrounding rocks. They do have some benches so you can sit and take in the views. This is a must see if you're into lighthouses you won't be sorry you did. There is a Welcome Center with restrooms plus a gift shop right near this and a fantastic Lobster restaurant called The Fox's Lobster House all within walking distance. The parking lot gets filled quickly and you may have to wait until someone leaves to get a spot but it's well worth it. I must give this Lighthouse a 5 out of 5 stars.

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The History and Significance of Nubble Lighthouse

The Cape Neddick Light Station, affectionately known as Nubble Lighthouse, was established in 1879 and its iconic tower was completed in 1897. It's a classic example of a coastal lighthouse designed to guide mariners safely along the rugged Maine coastline. The lighthouse is situated on a small, rocky island just offshore, making it a picturesque and unique landmark. Its distinctive red and white tower has made it one of the most recognizable lighthouses in the United States.

Historically, a light-duty cable and pulley system was used to transport supplies and personnel to the island. While the lighthouse is no longer staffed by a resident keeper, it remains an active aid to navigation, operated remotely by the U.S. Coast Guard. Its presence has been crucial for preventing shipwrecks on the treacherous 'Savage Rock' and surrounding shoals. The lighthouse is also a popular subject for artists and photographers, drawn to its charm and dramatic setting.

Despite its historical importance and visual appeal, Nubble Lighthouse is not open for public tours. Visitors can only admire it from the mainland. This preservation approach ensures the structure's longevity while still allowing the public to appreciate its beauty and the maritime history it represents. The surrounding area offers excellent viewpoints and a glimpse into the life of coastal New England. Reddit

Experiencing Nubble Lighthouse: Views and Accessibility

Visitors to Nubble Lighthouse can expect stunning, unobstructed views of the lighthouse from the mainland. The primary viewing area is a small parking lot and adjacent rocky shoreline. While you can't walk over to the lighthouse itself, the rocks provide a fantastic opportunity to get close to the water's edge and capture memorable photos. Benches are strategically placed along the viewing path, offering a comfortable spot to sit, relax, and take in the panoramic ocean vistas. Reddit

Accessibility can be a consideration. The parking lot area is relatively flat and can accommodate wheelchairs, offering good views. However, venturing down onto the craggy rocks for closer perspectives requires good mobility and sturdy footwear. Families with young children will find the viewing area engaging, but supervision is essential when exploring the rocky terrain. The overall experience is about appreciating the lighthouse from a distance and enjoying the natural beauty of the Maine coast. Reddit
