What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Old Faithful is a truly iconic and impressive natural wonder that lives up to its name with reliable eruptions. Visitors love the spectacle of the geyser and the opportunity to explore the surrounding thermal basin. Some find it crowded, but many suggest visiting during off-peak hours or exploring less-visited viewpoints for a more serene experience.
"Been here a dozen times and it never gets old. I will recommend seeing it from the backside away from the tourist zone on the platform, and even better would be, if you can, do the roughly 1.5 mile rt hike up to the Old Faithful Overlook and watch it from up there, gives you a totally different perspective. Either way, its an amazing experience!!!"

"Old Faithful is one of those places that truly lives up to the hype. Watching it erupt is a powerful experience, but what really took it to the next level for me was seeing it at sunset. The sky turned orange and pink, and the steam from the geyser caught the light in the most beautiful way. It felt like the whole area was glowing.
The eruption itself is impressive—predictable but never boring. It shoots up with such force, and it’s even more magical when you’re surrounded by the colors of the evening sky. The area around Old Faithful is also really peaceful in the evening. There are fewer crowds, the temperature starts to cool down, and the whole experience feels more personal.
There’s a nice boardwalk and plenty of viewing space, so it’s easy to find a good spot. I definitely recommend staying to watch an eruption close to sunset. It adds a whole new layer to the moment, and the views are absolutely stunning.
If you’re visiting Yellowstone, make sure to plan your time so you can catch Old Faithful during golden hour. It’s an experience I won’t forget, and it’s one of the best moments from our trip."

"Always amazing; always faithful! Old Faithful lives up to its name—erupting every 60–90 minutes with powerful blasts up to 180 ft! Crowded but iconic, it’s a must-see Yellowstone experience. During the day, arrive early for a front-row seat and check the visitor center for eruption times. I highly recommend watching it early in the morning before 8 or after 6—you will practically watch it by yourself."

The Science Behind Old Faithful
The predictability of Old Faithful is due to a specific plumbing system within the geyser. The underground chambers and conduits are shaped in such a way that they allow for a consistent buildup and release of pressure. While eruptions are predictable, slight variations in the underground water flow and heat can cause minor changes in the timing and height of the spray. Park rangers and scientists monitor these eruptions closely to understand the geyser's behavior and the geothermal activity of the region.
Visitors can learn more about the geology and science behind Old Faithful at the Old Faithful Visitor Education Center. Interactive exhibits explain the hydrothermal processes and the history of the geyser's observation. Understanding the science adds another layer of appreciation to this natural wonder.
Historic Old Faithful Inn
Staying at the Old Faithful Inn offers an immersive experience. Rooms are often described as basic but charming, with many offering views of the geyser. While Wi-Fi and TVs are limited or non-existent in some rooms, the focus is on the historic ambiance and the proximity to Old Faithful. It's a popular choice for those seeking a unique and memorable stay within the park.
Even if you're not staying overnight, the Old Faithful Inn is worth visiting. You can explore its impressive lobby, enjoy a meal at the dining room or cafeteria, and browse the gift shop. The inn's architecture and history are a significant part of the Old Faithful experience, offering a glimpse into early 20th-century park tourism.
Exploring the Upper Geyser Basin
Key features within the basin include the Grand Geyser, which is the world's tallest predictable geyser, and the Excelsior Geyser, known for its massive crater and hot spring. The Morning Glory Pool, famous for its vibrant colors, is another must-see. The boardwalks are well-maintained and provide an easy way to navigate the diverse landscape, allowing for close-up views of these natural phenomena.
For a different perspective, consider the hike to the Old Faithful Overlook. This trail, approximately 1.5 miles roundtrip, leads to an elevated viewpoint offering a panoramic vista of Old Faithful and the entire Upper Geyser Basin. It's a rewarding experience, especially for photographers and those seeking a broader understanding of the geyser field's scale.
