Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise Yellowstone's breathtaking natural beauty, from its iconic geysers and colorful hot springs to its dramatic canyons and abundant wildlife. Many highlight the unforgettable experience of seeing animals like bison and bears in their natural habitat. However, the park's immense popularity means summer visits can be very crowded, leading to traffic and packed viewpoints.

"Spotted grizzlies near nine mile meadow campsite near dusk, within a 6-day 88-mile loop backpacking trip. (Backcountry permit and parking decals needed for parking at trailhead overnight) Plenty of animal tracks on the route such as those of elk and wolves. Heard elk bugles but didn’t see them. Many water crossings along the route that will totally soak your shoes. Some campsites were hard to find due to inadequate Trail Blazers. Most remote campsites require 35+ feet ropes for hanging food. This was early September, morning temp varied from low 20s to high 40s, during the day 60s to high 70s. Unforgettable experience."

Yang Song

"Beautiful trail that runs along the south boundary of Yellowstone. If you're looking for wilderness and peacefulness, definitely go east from here. There's mountains, rivers, creeks, thermals, hot springs, and beautiful wildlife to be seen."

Joshua Thurman

"Breathtaking!!! A sheer joy for the family. As soon as you accept that the summers will be busy and packed the less stress you have cause you know what to expect. Late September the best time to visit."

When visiting geothermal areas, emphasize the importance of staying on boardwalks to ensure safety. Pack plenty of snacks and drinks, as dining options can be spread out. Consider shorter, accessible trails and allow for plenty of downtime. The sheer scale of the park means you won't see everything in one day, so focus on a few key areas to avoid overwhelming younger visitors. TikTokInstagram

🚗 Road Trippers & Day-Trippers

The South Entrance is a fantastic starting point for road trips, especially if you're coming from or heading to Grand Teton National Park. In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Navigating Yellowstone's Geothermal Wonders

Yellowstone is a geothermal wonderland, home to more than half of the world's geysers and hot springs. The Midway Geyser Basin is famous for the Grand Prismatic Spring, a breathtaking spectacle of vibrant colors caused by thermophilic bacteria. The Upper Geyser Basin is where you'll find Old Faithful, the park's most famous geyser, erupting predictably every 60-90 minutes. TikTok

When exploring these areas, it's crucial to stay on the designated boardwalks and trails. The ground around geothermal features can be thin and unstable, and the water is scalding hot. The steam can also obscure your vision, making it easy to stray off the path. Always follow park signage and ranger instructions to ensure your safety and protect these fragile environments. TikTokInstagram

Beyond the iconic geysers, Yellowstone boasts numerous other geothermal features like mudpots, fumaroles, and colorful hot springs. Each basin offers a unique geological experience, showcasing the immense power and beauty of the Earth's internal heat. Reddit

Wildlife Encounters: Safety and Best Practices

Yellowstone National Park is a sanctuary for an incredible array of wildlife, including bison, elk, pronghorn, bears, wolves, and more. The Lamar Valley and Hayden Valley are renowned for their abundant wildlife populations and are often referred to as the 'Serengeti of North America.' TikTok

When observing animals, maintain a safe and respectful distance. For large mammals like bison and elk, this means at least 25 yards (23 meters), and for bears and wolves, at least 100 yards (91 meters). Never feed wildlife, as it can lead to dangerous behaviors and harm their health. Carry bear spray and know how to use it, especially if you plan to hike. Reddit

Early morning and late evening are typically the best times for wildlife viewing, as animals are most active during these cooler parts of the day. Be patient, use binoculars or a telephoto lens for close-up views, and always be prepared for unexpected encounters. Remember, you are a visitor in their home. TikTokReddit

The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone

The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone is a spectacular geological formation carved by the Yellowstone River. It features two major waterfalls: the Upper Falls and the Lower Falls, with the latter plunging 308 feet. The canyon walls themselves are a vibrant palette of yellows, oranges, and reds, a result of hydrothermal alteration of the rhyolite rock, which is how the park got its name. TikTok

Several viewpoints offer breathtaking perspectives of the canyon and its waterfalls. Artist Point is perhaps the most famous, providing an iconic vista of the Lower Falls. Other popular spots include Inspiration Point and Lookout Point. Hiking trails, such as the Brink of the Upper Falls and Brink of the Lower Falls trails, allow for closer views and a more immersive experience. TikTok+1

Visiting during sunrise or sunset can offer particularly magical lighting conditions for photography, casting a warm glow on the canyon walls. Be prepared for crowds at the main viewpoints, especially during peak season. TikTok
