What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors appreciate Brewster Beach for its pleasant sandy shores and gradual entry into the water, making it suitable for families. The year-round access and winter activities are also a plus. However, a significant drawback for some is the strict policy prohibiting flotation devices, which can be a concern for families with young children or those needing extra safety in the water.
"Brewster Beach is located just a short distance from downtown Wolfeboro on the grounds of Brewster Academy. Nice sandy beach with a sandy bottom swimming area. Great for small kids as the drop off is a gradual slope. It is the home of the Wolfeboro Swim Team. The Wolfeboro Parks Department offers swim lessons here, and also an Open Water swim Program to prep yourself for the Granite Man Triathlon in August every year. Several picnic tables are available, and the beach is open sunrise to sunset year-round. The parking lot is plowed and provides public access to the beach during the winter months for ice fishing, skiing, skating, and maneuvering your Bob House out on the lake. These are early April images, long before the swimming lanes and platforms are installed."

"The rules are designed to say we allow young children BUT we don’t allow life jackets. So it politely excludes young children without saying so directly. Absolutely ridiculous!"

"My friend that I support loves the water and this (aside from Albee that we can no longer go to) is one of our favorites. Unfortunately, today we were told that the coast gaurd approved vest that my fried (a non swimming adult) uses is not allowed. My friend has autism, I have worked hard to engrain certain rules about entering the water (never go in without your buddy, never go in without your life jacket. I have contacted and left a message with brewster beach hoping they will work us however, if you are a parent of a small child, you will not be able to use water wings or flotation devices, even a coast gaurd approved life jacket is currently not allowed. If my friend and I were on a boat on the same body of water, we would have to wear life jackets. This rule seems counter intuitive. Please change or think about an accepting for coast gaurd approved life jackets with supervision within arms length. Thank you."

Understanding Brewster Beach's Unique Rules
This policy stands in contrast to the beach's otherwise family-friendly features, such as its sandy bottom and gradual slope, which are ideal for small children. The Wolfeboro Parks Department does offer swim lessons and an open water program, highlighting a focus on water activities. However, the strict stance on flotation devices means parents and guardians must be extra vigilant and ensure children are strong swimmers or avoid water entry altogether if they would normally use a vest.
For those planning a visit, it's crucial to be aware of this specific rule to avoid disappointment. If you or your companions require flotation for safety or comfort, you may need to reconsider Brewster Beach or be prepared for a strictly supervised, flotation-free water experience.
Navigating Parking and Access
This distinction is important to note to avoid confusion and ensure you find the correct access point. Relying solely on GPS to the academy might lead you to the wrong area. Always look for signage directing you to the public beach parking.
Once parked in the correct lot, you can access the beach, which is open year-round from sunrise to sunset. The parking area is plowed in winter, facilitating access for ice-related activities on the lake.
Brewster Beach Through the Seasons
As the seasons change, the beach transforms. In late August, the bay is often calm, with sailboats gracing the water, providing picturesque scenes perfect for photography. The beach remains open year-round, and in winter, it becomes a hub for ice-related activities. The plowing of the parking lot allows access for ice fishing, skiing, and skating on the frozen lake, offering a unique way to experience the area.
This year-round accessibility means Brewster Beach isn't just a summer destination. Whether you're looking for a warm-weather swim or a crisp winter adventure, the beach provides a consistent point of access to the beauty of Wolfeboro Bay.
