What an amazing day in Winterset at the Iowa Quilt Museum. It was an amazing show and pictures just don’t do it justice. Mary Kerr is an amazing quilt artist who saves old quilts and turns them into pieces of art.

Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the Iowa Quilt Museum for its beautiful and diverse exhibits, highlighting the skilled craftsmanship and artistic merit of the quilts. The knowledgeable staff and the charming town of Winterset add to the positive experience. While some find the museum small, most agree it's a worthwhile stop for anyone interested in art, history, or textiles.

"My wife & I made a weekday afternoon stop to tour the Iowa Quilt Museum in Downtown Winterset, Iowa on our way up to a leisure weekend in the Des Moines area. The Museum is small, with no more than 30-40 minutes required to admire the current exhibition (changed out 4 times per year) on the ground floor beyond the gift shop & check-in desk plus the handful of permanent quilt-related displays beyond the exhibition space & up the stairs in a loft area. The Museum attendant was very knowledgeable in the quilting arts & history, very hands on (with gloves) while introducing us to the exhibition ("Mama’s Got The Blues:
Nineteenth Century Indigo Quilts from a Daughter’s Collection") before letting us inspect the quilts & snap photos & tour the rest of the Museum at our own pace.

My wife was very pleased that we visited the Iowa Quilt Museum, while I learned some interesting details involved in the craft & its social roots. She will definitely be recommending a visit by her quilting friends back home."

"If you are interested in art, skilled handcraftsmanship, geometry, or quilting, this venue should be considered when you are in the area.

My wife and I stopped here yesterday for a brief visit after finding ample parking near the entrance of the museum, which is located within a former JC Penny department store.

The rotating exhibit we saw was a collection of more than 20 full size mattress handmade indigo and white colored exquisitely crafted quilts created in Michigan around 1870 in Michigan.

In a mezzanine level, there were several antique sewing machines from popular worldwide American and European companies and a single small doll house.

The veteran and senior citizen cost of admission was $10."

Jeff Peters

"Even if you're not a quilt person you should visit this museum. Although they have older artifacts, you need to see the changes to today's quilts. These are really works of art. The displays change out. All the works when we visited were part of the modern quilt movement. Not your grandma's quilt."
