Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Bunker Harbor Overlook for its stunning, classic Maine coastal scenery and the iconic views of Winter Harbor Light. The quieter atmosphere of the Schoodic Peninsula is a significant draw, offering a more relaxed experience than other parts of Acadia. Some note that the lighthouse is distant and requires a telephoto lens for good photos.

"Winter Harbor Light, also known as Mark Island Light, is a charming and historically rich lighthouse located off the coast of Winter Harbor, Maine. Built in 1856, it stands on the small and rocky Mark Island, guarding the entrance to Winter Harbor and offering an iconic sight for those exploring the Schoodic Peninsula and surrounding waters.

The lighthouse itself is modest in size, yet striking in its simplicity. Its white cylindrical tower, capped with a black lantern, rises gracefully against the backdrop of the deep blue Atlantic. The keeper’s house and auxiliary buildings, though not accessible to the public, add to the classic New England maritime charm. The lighthouse is best viewed from the water or certain points along the shore, such as Schoodic Point, where you can catch beautiful, distant views.

For history enthusiasts, Winter Harbor Light is a fascinating piece of Maine’s maritime heritage. It was built to help guide fishing vessels and coastal schooners safely through the often foggy and treacherous waters of Frenchman Bay. Today, although it is automated and no longer manned, it continues to function as an active aid to navigation."

"We viewed and photographed (telephoto lens) the Winter Harbor Light from the west side of the Schoodic Peninsula loop road within the mainland section of Acadia National Park. The brick lighthouse is standing on Mark's Island and was built in 1856 to guide mariners into the popular harbor and warn them of dangerous rocks. The lighthouse was decommissioned in 1933 and is now privately owned. It is not open to the public.

Both of Winter Harbor’s lighthouses – Winter Harbor (or Mark Island) Light and Egg Rock Light – are on offshore islands and can best seen by boat tour from Bar Harbor."
