What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
The Winona Public Library Carnegie is overwhelmingly praised for its stunning 1899 architecture, particularly its unique book stacks and dome, making it a top destination for history and book lovers. While the building and many of its staff receive high marks, some visitors have experienced negative interactions with front desk staff regarding book returns.
"All I have to say is Wow... This library is a 10/10! The architecture in this building is STUNNING and the collections of books were amazing! Wish I could have stayed longer but alas, had to explore the rest of the city! I think for anyone that's interested in architecture or libraries, I think this would be the place for you to visit"

"We had a fantastic tour of the Winona Public Library, built in 1899 with funds donated by local lumber baron William Harris Laird (just 10 years after Carnegie built his first public library). The photos cannot do the building justice; the dome is beautiful, but the book stacks are absolutely remarkable! They hang on steel supports that run from the ground floor straight through to the third story, and the floors of each story are made of thick, strong, translucent glass.
If you are ever in the area, try to catch one of the tours given at 10 am on Thursdays, it's well worth it."

"I love this library, but I don't appreciate how every time I come in to return my books, the employees in the front do the most, like openly make fun of me for how many books I'm returning. Yes, I returned 10+ books. I'm an avid reader who can't afford to buy books, sorry it made more work for you? I stopped coming into this library for 5 months because I got tired of the snarky comments. Today, I'm going to read my last three books, and I won't be coming here anymore.
If you're someone who reads a lot, consider breaking up how many books you read at once, to avoid upsetting the library staff since apparently there's a social code I haven't learned.
Outside of the staff, the library itself is beautiful. The beautiful architecture, history, and social events make this one of the best places to visit when you do.
There are multiple computers for you to use, water fountains, and it's cheaper to print/scan. The library is wifi equiped and fast. It is always fairly clean inside and outside. The library is also equipped with an elevator, which is a big plus; I was very greatful for its existence when I was pregnant. The staff upstairs are always nice and welcoming but good luck with the staff at the main doors. The staff inside the children's section always seem to be nice as well.
Overall I loved this library, but I'm happy to go elsewhere since I don't need to feel like a nuisance just because I returned 10+ books at once."

Some patrons report encountering friendly and knowledgeable librarians, particularly those working upstairs or in the children's section. However, a recurring point of feedback involves interactions at the main entrance, where some visitors have felt uncomfortable due to perceived judgmental comments about the number of books being returned. This has led some avid readers to alter their borrowing habits or avoid the library altogether.

The presence of a nice anime section also appeals to a diverse range of interests, further solidifying its role as a multifaceted public institution.
