Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the absolutely gorgeous and breathtaking views of the Mississippi River and surrounding bluffs, especially from King's Bluff and other overlooks. The easy access to these stunning vistas is a major plus. However, some note the lack of running water and the potential for intense mosquitoes in summer.

"Absolutely gorgeous! You enter the park already up high on a bluff so the hiking is easy. We did the Kings bluff loop, entering the forest on a pine-lined trail and end up amongst the deciduous trees. The views of the other bluffs & the Mississippi are absolutely stunning!
There's a small welcome center with well marked maps and all the trails were easily marked.
There are a few vault toilets, but we did not see any running water. We hiked in Nov.1st, so perhaps any water was already shut off for the winter."

Rachel Petty

"Expect a dirt/gravel road. The Ranger Station can be easy to miss. It is not the Welcome Center. This time of year (mid Sept) it is hot and muggy. You will be in need of Deet. I am enjoying my stay. I have a nice campsite and the park is pleasantly quiet. I enjoyed the short hike to 2 overlooks and plan to do Kings Bluff Trail tomorrow."

Flo Miller

"This park is a must-stop when traveling thru “Bluff Country ” of SE MN. Located on top of river bluffs, it offers multiple breathtaking views of the surrounding area on both the bluff and river sides.

For the grand tour, start at the southern end in the campground and head to Orchard Overlook, then proceed north to the East Overlook and continue on to the South and North Overlook and finally, work your way up to King’s Bluff, past rare bluff-top prairie (please stay on trail to protect this fragile area) to take in spectacular views of Queens Bluff and the Mississippi River beyond.

The campground is decently sized offering well-spaced campsites with decent privacy. There are new tent pads on several sites, but note that most sites have some slope to them being on the bluffs and most larger trailers will not fit ( check each site during reservation for Max length). Also there are no elec sites here so plan accordingly and bring your solar power generators.

Cell service is ok in campground, better near park office. Facilities are older but in good shape and there are several vault toilets all throughout the park (picnic area, park office, cart in, etc).

In summer after heavy or prolonged rain, mosquitoes can be terrible, the heavy tree cover can hinder helping breezes to keep them at bay so bring shelters and sprays.

The picnic area is quite nice and large. The are several nice spots tucked into the forest so explore to find just the right one for lunch!"

Exploring the Overlooks

Great River Bluffs State Park is renowned for its numerous overlooks, each offering a distinct perspective of the majestic Mississippi River and the surrounding 'Bluff Country'. Visitors often recommend starting at the southern end near the campground and making their way north. Orchard Overlook provides an accessible, sweeping panorama, while the East, South, and North Overlooks continue to showcase the grandeur of the river valley. These viewpoints are easily accessible, making them perfect for a quick stop or for those who prefer less strenuous exploration. Reddit

For a more adventurous experience, the King's Bluff Trail leads to the park's most iconic viewpoint. This trail takes you through varied terrain, including pine-lined paths and deciduous forests, eventually reaching rare bluff-top prairies. It's essential to stay on the marked trails here to protect this delicate ecosystem. The views from King's Bluff are often described as spectacular, offering expansive vistas of Queens Bluff and the Mississippi River beyond. Reddit

Photography enthusiasts will find these overlooks to be prime locations. The best times for capturing the scenery are during the 'golden hours' of sunrise and sunset, when the light casts a warm glow over the landscape. Wide-angle lenses are recommended to capture the full scope of the panoramic views. Remember to bring your camera and plenty of memory space to document the breathtaking scenery. Reddit

Hiking Trails and Terrain

While Great River Bluffs State Park is celebrated for its overlooks, it also offers a network of hiking trails that cater to various fitness levels. The park's unique topography means you often start at a high elevation, making some hikes feel less strenuous. The King's Bluff Trail is a popular choice, offering a moderate challenge with rewarding views. This trail showcases the park's diverse flora, transitioning from dense forests to open, rare bluff-top prairies. Reddit

For those seeking a more relaxed walk, the paths leading to the various overlooks are generally well-maintained and easy to navigate. However, it's important to be prepared for the natural environment. In the summer months, the park can be hot and humid, and mosquitoes can be quite prevalent due to the heavy tree cover and potential for rain. Bringing insect repellent and wearing appropriate clothing is highly advised. Reddit

When exploring the trails, especially those that traverse the bluff tops, sturdy footwear is a must. The terrain can be uneven, and some sites have a noticeable slope. Always stick to marked paths to avoid erosion and protect the sensitive plant life, particularly the bluff-top prairies, which are a unique and fragile habitat. Reddit

Camping Experience

The campground at Great River Bluffs State Park provides a peaceful retreat for those looking to extend their visit. Sites are described as well-spaced, offering a good degree of privacy. The park features new tent pads on several sites, enhancing the camping experience for tenters. This makes it an ideal spot for those who enjoy a more rustic camping experience and are prepared for off-grid living. Vault toilets are available throughout the park, but running water is not provided at the campsites. Reddit

For those who prefer a more primitive camping style, cart-in sites are available. These sites require you to carry your gear in, and while carts aren't provided, wheelbarrows are available for use. Cell service is reported to be decent in the campground and even better near the park office, offering a balance between seclusion and connectivity. Reddit
