Winchester is a great day trip idea. It's only one hour away by train from Waterloo Station in London. An interesting fact: Winchester used to be the capital of England? It's worth mentioning, Jane Austen's grave is in Winchester cathedral. It's kind of near the entrance on the left. Places to see would be: - Winchester Cathedral - Priors Gate - Wolvesey Castle ruins - Winchester City Mill - St Gi...

Taking in a sunset at St Catherines Hill in Winchester, Hampshire 🌅 The walk up to the top is well worth it to watch the sunset go down over the Countryside, water meadows with the River Itchen and City scape of Winchester. You can see Hospital of St Cross, the Hockley Viaduct, historic buildings over across the City like the Cathedral and much more. 🧺 Enjoy a picnic too, but remember to leave n...

Reviews Summary

Visitors appreciate the natural beauty of Lower Howard's Creek Preserve, particularly the opportunities for children to play in the creek and the scenic trails along the Kentucky River. However, the preserve's very limited Thursday-only operating hours and sometimes challenging trail conditions are noted drawbacks. Some visitors are also disappointed by restricted access to certain natural features.

"Gate was locked for 10 minutes after the posted opening .trails were well maintained and not crowded until we were returning to the gate. One group had dogs with them allowing them to use the creek side as a bathroom same group had toddlers and allowed them to also use the bathroom in the creek side. As we were leaving several groups were arriving at 12:45PM when the posted closing time was 1:00 PM stronger control on this area is warranted"

"I just went for the first time, 2days ago. We went back again today!! The kids and husband and myself all had a good time playing in the water. Haven't gone on more than 1 trail either. Its great! Moderate to difficult trails but my kids are 7 and 9 and my husband and I are 40. We saw people with smaller kids, I recommend you keep them close! Also, not stroller friendly. No dogs allowed. No fishing allowed. They have parking spaces right next to Halls On The River and across the street. We had a blast!"

Christina B

"Beautiful trail near Kentucky River. But very short. It took us 30 min to drive there from Lex. But the trail is short. We did it in summer. If you want to do complete trail, note it's muddy trail. Good for kids since they can play along the river stream."

Navigating the Trails

The trails at Lower Howard's Creek Preserve offer a natural and somewhat rugged hiking experience. Visitors describe them as moderate to difficult, with sections that can become quite muddy, especially after rain. Some areas are noted as being overgrown, suggesting that sturdy, closed-toe footwear is essential for a comfortable and safe hike. Reddit While the main trails are generally navigable, there are also unlabeled paths that branch off, which can be disorienting for those unfamiliar with the area. Reddit It's recommended to stick to the more established routes unless you are an experienced hiker comfortable with off-trail exploration. The terrain is also not stroller-friendly, so families with very young children should be prepared to carry them or use a child carrier. Reddit

Recent reviews indicate that "natural protection" efforts have led to some areas, including previously accessible waterfalls, being closed off to the public. Reddit This means that while the preserve offers beautiful natural scenery, access to certain features may be restricted. Understanding Access and Rules

Visitors have reported gates being locked shortly after the posted closing time, and some arriving just before closing, leading to potential crowding. Reddit

Furthermore, the preserve has specific rules in place to protect its natural environment. Dogs are strictly prohibited, and fishing is not allowed. Reddit These regulations are in place to preserve the delicate ecosystem and ensure a peaceful experience for all visitors. Some reviews mention instances of dogs being allowed to use the creek side as a bathroom, which is a violation of the rules and detracts from the natural beauty. Reddit Adhering to these rules is vital for the continued enjoyment and preservation of this natural space. Reddit
