What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Williamsburg Pottery offers a wide array of home goods and decor, with some visitors appreciating the selection and potential for good deals, especially during Saturday wine tastings. However, a significant number of recent reviews express disappointment, citing concerns about cleanliness, outdated merchandise, and a decline from its once-beloved 'treasure hunt' atmosphere.
"It always feels like you need a shower after coming here. My family and I wanted to do something different so we gave this place another try and just yuck. I wish I had taken more pictures. I saw a pair of sandals that had some sort of brown goo all over them. It was so disgusting. These are just the floors. Imagine how the merchandise looks. Everything is dusty, old and smelly (like the yellowed iPhone 4 cases that no one has anymore) Can you do us a favor and close down so we can get something nice in that area? Like a nice outlet mall or something. I honestly have no idea how they’re paying rent here. They get no more than 3 customers a day. I’m honestly always afraid to buy anything, it genuinely doesn’t feel safe and sanitary to bring it into your home."

"When I was a kid back in the '70s and '80s we used to love coming to The Pottery. To get to some of the buildings you had to go across the railroad tracks which, as kids, we thought was the best thing ever. I used to love looking for treasures and I loved the smell of the dried flower shop. I remember finding a plaster horse head that I was able to hang on my wall as a young girl and little glass blown animals. It was a lovely experience. And then they sold out and created these strip mall buildings that offer overpriced items and no special treasures. I do not recommend."

"The building the Pottery is housed in is very nice. The shopping center the pottery is housed in is exquisite. Most of the merchandise is nice. But as many reviewers commented, it is not the pottery of yesteryear. On the other hand, change is inevitable. However, what was most disturbing is the conduct of a male I could hear in the back area of the establishment. I could hear him, but not see him. It was like he was hidden. And as many commenters noted, there are hardly any shoppers. I was stunned of the lack of customers. Nevertheless, as I was shopping towards the rear of the store where the paintings are located, I heard a male constantly coughing. I thought my goodness he is very ill. He should go home. The closer I got to wherever he was in the rear, the coughing became louder and more frequent. As I moved away from the rear area, the coughing became less. There was another female shopper making her way to the back as I was leaving it. When I arrived at the register to pay for my merchandise, I noticed the coughing stopped. The female cashier then moved from the register she was sitting at and moved to another and stated she would take me at that register. I developed an unsettled feeling. What I believe was happening was the male was signaling to the female my location in the store because she could not see the rear of the store from the register location. I am in disbelief as I conducted myself in an appropriate manner while patronizing this establishment. I believe in supporting small businesses, but under these circumstances, I will avoid continuing to support this one."

Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
However, be aware that some reviews mention cleanliness concerns, which might be a factor for families with very young children. It's best to manage expectations; it's more of a shopping destination than a family attraction. Consider it a brief stop rather than a primary family outing.
💰 Budget Travelers
It's important to go with a specific shopping list or focus on departments where you're likely to find value. Don't expect the deep discounts of a traditional outlet mall, but rather a selection of goods at competitive prices. The free wine tasting is also a budget-friendly perk that adds value to the visit.
couples
Consider it a casual outing rather than a romantic destination. The focus is on shopping, but the shared activity of discovering items and perhaps enjoying a wine sample can be a nice bonding experience.

The Evolution of Williamsburg Pottery
However, the pottery has undergone significant changes over the decades. The shift from its original, more rustic setup to its current format has been noted by many. While it still offers a wide array of home goods, kitchenware, and decor, the sense of discovery has diminished for some. The focus has moved towards a more conventional retail experience, which, while practical, doesn't always capture the magic of its past.
Despite the changes, Williamsburg Pottery continues to be a point of interest for its extensive product lines and occasional special events. It remains a place where shoppers can find specific home goods and decorative items, even if the experience is different from what it once was. The brand itself, associated with Williamsburg, VA, still holds a certain appeal for visitors to the region.
Navigating Visitor Experiences and Reviews
Conversely, some visitors still find value in the pottery, particularly those looking for specific items or good deals. The availability of free wine tastings on Saturdays is a frequently mentioned positive aspect, adding an enjoyable element to the shopping trip. Others appreciate the vast selection of home essentials and outdoor living items, suggesting that while the 'treasure hunt' feel may be gone, practical shopping opportunities remain.
There are also more concerning reviews that highlight unsettling experiences, including observations of staff behavior that raise questions about safety and sanitation. These reviews, though less frequent, contribute to a complex picture of the visitor experience. It's clear that while some find value, others are put off by perceived issues with the store's upkeep and management.
