Reviews Summary
Wheaton Cemetery offers a peaceful and spacious environment for reflection, with some staff noted for their professionalism and helpfulness during difficult times. However, significant concerns have been raised regarding the removal of grave markers and decorations without notification, and instances of damage to headstones by maintenance vehicles.
"I wish I knew things before purchasing 6 parcels in this Cemetery. My grandma was just buried a few days ago and we put a temporary cross as a marker to identify her until the grave is ordered and delivered but I go to visit and to my utter dismay I find out that Bob had removed the marker with no notification, no phone call, no letter, nothing. You would think before they touch or remove anything that you would be notified first and given a time frame to remove whatever needs to be removed. The rules and regulations are not displayed anywhere nor were they sent to us at the time of purchase for us to know. They have removed candle holders and markers from my other loved one and didn't notify us but we had to find out at the time we visited. Very disappointed at this Cemetery and if this continues I will make sure the boards finds out about this and takes the necessary measures!"

"On the afternoon of Friday, July 16th-2021, I went to the Wheaton Cemetery to visit the grave site of my 17 year old brother. To my shock and utter dismay, his headstone along with 5 or 6 others had been completely driven on by one of the cemetery's maintenance trucks to dig another grave within their vicinity.
I stood there for a few minutes in complete shock because you could see every single tire tread in the grass because of the wet weather conditions that we recently had. Not only could you see the grass completely destroyed around these headstones, but you could clearly see the muddy tire tracks across not only my brothers headstone, but the ones around his. I had to literally take my foot and wipe the dried mud off just to see his name.
After trying my best to remove the dried and muddy tire tracks from his headstone, I drove to the office that they have on site and knocked on the door. A man answered and I told him very calmly how upsetting it was to see tire tracks on top of the headstones. He followed me over to my brothers site and told me that someone would come over and rinse it off. He quickly left without one utterance of an apology.
I sat in my car and waited, but no one ever showed up to rinse his headstone off. I drove back to the office and explained to this ghoulish cemetery creature that it is COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE TO DRIVE OVER PEOPLES HEADSTONES AND LEAVE MUDDY TIRE TRACKS!!! DON’T BE A LAZY CRYPT KEEPER AND TAKE SHORT CUTS. IF YOU HAVE TO DRIVE OVER GRAVES, ESPECIALLY IN WET AND MUDDY CONDITIONS….YOU COVER THE GRAVES WITH SOMETHING AND MAKE SURE YOU RINSE THEM OFF.
I can’t get that sight out of my head, and words can’t describe how upsetting and heartbreaking that day was.
I’m very, very disappointed in your Cemetery and your lack of compassion for the living, but moreover your complete lack of respect for the dead.
YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED!!!!!"

Understanding Cemetery Regulations and Visitor Experiences
This lack of clear communication can be particularly upsetting during times of grief. The experience of finding a loved one's grave marker removed without warning underscores the importance of a transparent and empathetic approach from cemetery management. While the cemetery is described as a peaceful place for reflection, these administrative issues can significantly detract from the visitor experience.
For those considering Wheaton Cemetery, it is highly recommended to obtain a written copy of the rules and regulations at the time of purchase or visit. Documenting the state of a grave site with photographs before and after any planned maintenance or decoration placement can also serve as a helpful record.
Maintenance and Grave Site Care
These incidents have understandably caused significant emotional distress to grieving families who expect a certain level of respect and care for their loved ones' final resting places. The lack of immediate apology or prompt resolution from cemetery staff in some reported cases has further exacerbated these negative experiences.
While cemeteries must perform necessary maintenance, the methods employed should prioritize the preservation and respect of existing grave sites. Clear protocols for covering graves, avoiding direct impact on markers, and thorough cleaning afterward are essential. Visitors experiencing such issues are encouraged to address them calmly but firmly with cemetery management.
