What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Chicago Golf Club is lauded for its exceptional historical significance as the first 18-hole course in the U.S. and its masterful C.B. Macdonald design. Visitors praise the stunning clubhouse and the challenging, timeless course. However, a significant negative review details a distressing incident involving a fallen tree and the club's alleged poor response, highlighting a stark contrast in experiences.
"This place is awesome!!! They had the best Lead Assistant in the country for two years in 2021 and 2022. Incredible staff."

"I'm disappointed to report the horrible treatment of Chicago Golf Club towards my family. On September 7, 2021, my 3 yr old daughter and I were driving to our home in Wheaton along Plamondon Rd when a massive tree fell from Chicago Golf Club property on top of our car. We were trapped inside and I was absolutely terrified to look in the backseat to see if my daughter was still alive. Neighbors across the street watched the incident and came rushing out to assist my daughter and I climbing out of the passenger windows. The neighbors who saw the tree fall said they were afraid there would be only causalities in the car. They affirmed the tree had been dead for at least the past five years and would be happy to testify in court against the golf club if need be. Several firetrucks, police cars and ambulances soon arrived on the scene. Our car was hauled off by a tow truck, and I firmly believed it would be the last time we would ever see it.
I'm so thankful we walked away without physical injury, but the emotional trauma it caused - especially to my young daughter - is still present. She was terrified of getting in cars and trees for a long time and still is processing the event to this day.
Instead of totaling the car as they should have, the golf club agreed to pay for its "repair." Unfortunately, that was the same week we were moving out of state and so could not be physically present to oversee next steps. When they delivered the car to us a month later at our new home, my husband was not present and the driver presumably could not speak English to answer my questions. The car has only had problems since. The car leaked fluid, the sensors were broken, including the emergency braking system, the steering wheel and shift gears stuck, the tires could not hold pressure, etc. We ended up having to pay thousands of dollars more out of pocket to have things "fixed" again, but it still has problems.
We called the Chicago Golf Club almost daily, asking to speak to someone, and the manager/owner was never available. When we wrote to the Chicago Golf Club, asking for them to please make things right, they threatened us with a nasty letter, telling us that if we tried to come after them legally, they would destroy us. They denied their responsibility in the matter.
I still have hope that the Chicago Golf Club will make things right. They owe us the value of a new car and compensation for the psychological trauma we endured. They proudly boast that they are the oldest golf club in North America, and yet with their deep pockets and resources, they could not manage to do the right thing for a family who lived in their own neighborhood. The sportsmanship displayed is a discredit to their name."
