What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors generally praise the Misquamicut Drive-In for its charming, nostalgic atmosphere and enjoyable outdoor movie experience. The attentive staff and unique touches like glass bottle sodas are often highlighted. However, some guests note issues with distracting car headlights, limited snack bar options, and the need to bring personal comforts like chairs and bug spray for optimal enjoyment.
"I loved it here! Perfectly cute little drive in. It isn’t huge but it was the perfect size for our event. What a fun spot
Clean restrooms and nice staff; they came to check on us at the end of the films and make sure we were okay (older cars probably die a lot here)
I would personally recommend getting out of the car and bringing seats/blankets/drinks/bug spray because it’s more enjoyable that way and we did end up doing that for the last movie
There were a couple of little kinks with it but they’ve already been mentioned in the other comments. I did enjoy myself a lot regardless.
(The other comment here is correct about people coming in with their headlights on. Maybe they need a sign or ticketing attendants need to remember to tell every person who comes in to turn their lights off until they leave? Not sure the legality of that) also there’s a bar across the street and the motorcyclists would occasionally blind us as well and make the movie hard to watch so maybe they need some kind of tree or bush or billboard installed facing the other businesses?
Our radio volume was also not able to really get loud enough to hear it if they can do anything about making it not needing to be turned up to 100% on our radio and deafening us when we accidentally changed the channel lol"

"Why do you let people drive in TWENTY MINUTES into the movie?! Shining their brights in our faces and disturbing everyone who came ON TIME and are trying to enjoy the movie???? So obnoxious. Everything else was fine but wouldn't recommend."

"Please don't tease with snack bar ads if you dont have the food. There's nothing edible within a 1/2 mile from here so be sure to pack your own snacks. $6 for popcorn that's questionable. $3 for a kitkat."

Capturing the ambiance of a drive-in movie can be challenging due to low light conditions. Focus on capturing the overall atmosphere, car setups, and the iconic screen.
The best time for photography is likely during the twilight hours before the movie starts, or during the movie itself if you can manage low-light settings. Capturing the illuminated screen against the night sky is a classic shot.

The vintage cars, the large outdoor screen, and the general retro atmosphere offer unique photo opportunities. Consider capturing the details like the speaker boxes or the classic signage.

The Drive-In Experience: More Than Just a Movie
To truly maximize the experience, many seasoned visitors recommend getting out of your car. Bringing comfortable seating like chairs or blankets allows for a more relaxed viewing, especially if you plan to stay for double features. Don't forget essentials like bug spray, as outdoor venues can attract insects, particularly during warmer months. The staff is noted for being attentive, even checking on guests at the end of films, which adds a personal touch to the visit.
However, potential drawbacks exist. Some reviews mention issues with headlights from late-arriving cars or glare from nearby businesses, which can be distracting. Additionally, while a snack bar is present, packing your own food and drinks is often advised due to limited options and questionable quality. Understanding these nuances can help you prepare for a seamless and enjoyable trip to this retro cinematic gem.
Navigating Sound and Sight at the Drive-In
Visuals can also be a point of consideration. While the large outdoor screen is the main attraction, light disturbances can detract from the viewing experience. This includes headlights from other vehicles, particularly those arriving late, and light pollution from adjacent establishments. Some visitors have suggested potential solutions like better signage or physical barriers to mitigate these issues. If you're sensitive to light or sound, arriving early to secure a prime spot and bringing earplugs or eye masks might be beneficial.
Despite these potential challenges, the overall sentiment is that the Misquamicut Drive-In provides a unique and enjoyable movie-going experience. By being aware of the sound and sight dynamics, and preparing accordingly, you can significantly enhance your visit and fully embrace the nostalgic charm of this classic entertainment venue.
