During my visit to Glacier National Park, I was fortunate enough to snag a night at the Many Glacier Hotel — Glacier National Park’s most iconic lodge, built in 1915 with dreamy Swiss chalet vibes. Nestled on Swiftcurrent Lake with jaw-dropping views of Grinnell Point, it’s steps from the park’s best and most famous hikes (Iceberg, Cracker, Grinnell) and full of historic charm. No TV, no distracti...

The Granite Park Chalet is a historic landmark nestled at 6,693 ft in the heart of Montana’s wilderness. Built in 1913 by the Great Northern Railway, its construction was an engineering feat. The stone for the buildings was quarried from the nearby mountain slopes and other materials were carried by pack train from the Many Glacier Hotel, nine miles by trail over Swiftcurrent Pass. During the two ...

Reviews Summary

Guests rave about the spectacular location and historic charm of Granite Park Chalet, offering a unique backcountry experience. However, the extremely thin walls are a recurring complaint, making noise a significant issue for many. Staff friendliness is generally praised, but the pit toilets are noted as being quite unpleasant.

"Walls of the chalet are paper thin. Neighbors brought a baby with them to the chalet. Baby cried off and on all night long. The chalet should have age restrictions so people who can remember the experience can enjoy it. I also thought the staff there were not particularly helpful and did the bare minimum. I also stayed at Sperry Chalet this summer and the staff there went above and beyond to be accommodating and helpful. What a difference in attitude and professionalism. The only plus is the location-which is spectacular. It could be better with a little tweaking."

Lori Hoch

"We had a great trip. It was so close to many trails you normally can't reach in a day. The staff was very helpful and friendly. The only downfall was walls were paper thin, so you heard all your neighbors. Wearing ear plugs at night was a must, but the views were breathe taking."

Ray Harris

"It's a historic Chalet in a wilderness!
Gorgeous views, amazingly friendly staff.
The kitchen times are bit early (4:30-6:30p), but having a kitchen is a luxury! There's a 7:30p evening program for all hotel guests where hot water, coffee, tea, and cocoa are offered.
The pit toilet is an absolute hazard. It's being used by all hikers and guests all day long, and it's ripe. Riper than ripe. Bring a mask and don't stand downwind.
As other have mentioned the walls are thin. Like thinner than thin. I have never experienced anything like it. "There are no secrets in the chalet" was said by staffmember while offering ear plugs. Wear them.
Our room was outfitted with 2 bunk sets, sleeping 4. The $40 offered bedding was a treat! I stayed nice and warm, and the beds were fairly comfortable. Personally, I slept really well.
Extra blankets and flashlights were also offered.
We even got to witness the pack mules on our way down!"

For Different Travelers

Tailored advice for your travel style

👨‍👩‍👧 Families with Kids

An overnight stay at Granite Park Chalet can be an adventurous experience for families, but it requires careful consideration. The hike in can be challenging for younger children, so assess your kids' hiking abilities and endurance. The thin walls and shared sleeping spaces might also be a concern with very young children who require quiet. Reddit

However, for families with older, adventurous children, it offers an unforgettable wilderness experience. The stunning scenery and the novelty of staying in a historic backcountry lodge can be incredibly rewarding. Ensure you pack plenty of snacks and water, and consider bringing earplugs for everyone to ensure a more restful night's sleep. Instagram

🎒 Budget Travelers

Granite Park Chalet offers a unique and relatively affordable way to experience the heart of Glacier National Park's backcountry, especially compared to staying in hotels within the park. While the reservation process is challenging, the cost per person for an overnight stay is generally reasonable for the experience provided. Instagram

However, remember that 'budget' here is relative to the unique experience. You'll need to factor in the cost of food, as you must bring all your own provisions. The main 'cost' is the effort and planning required to secure a reservation and the physical effort of hiking in. Instagram

🚶‍♀️ Solo Hikers

Granite Park Chalet is an excellent destination for solo hikers looking for a memorable backcountry adventure. The Highline Trail offers a well-traveled route, and the communal nature of the chalet means you'll likely meet other hikers and share stories. Instagram+1

Solo travelers should be particularly mindful of booking well in advance, as reservations are highly competitive. The thin walls mean you'll be privy to the conversations of others, so if you value absolute solitude, this might not be the ideal choice. However, for those seeking connection and a shared wilderness experience, it's perfect. Reddit

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Highline Trail Experience

The Highline Trail is arguably one of the most iconic hikes in Glacier National Park, and it's the primary route to Granite Park Chalet. This trail is renowned for its dramatic cliffside path, offering unparalleled views of the surrounding peaks and valleys. It's a relatively flat trail for much of its length, making it accessible for many, but the exposure and sheer drop-offs can be intimidating for those with a fear of heights. Instagram+1

Hikers often describe the experience as walking along the 'backbone' of the mountains. Along the way, you'll encounter alpine meadows, potential wildlife sightings (like mountain goats and bighorn sheep), and the stunning scenery of Glacier's rugged interior. The trail can be busy, especially during peak season, so starting early is recommended. TikTok+1

Reaching Granite Park Chalet via the Highline Trail is a rewarding accomplishment. The chalet itself is nestled in a spectacular location, making the challenging hike feel entirely worthwhile. Remember to download offline maps and carry plenty of water, as services are non-existent along the trail. Instagram

Life at the Historic Chalet

Staying at Granite Park Chalet is a step back in time. Built in 1913 by the Great Northern Railway, it's one of the few remaining historic backcountry chalets in the park, designed to offer comfortable accommodations for travelers exploring the wilderness. The architecture is charmingly rustic, with stone exteriors and simple, functional interiors. Instagram+2

The experience is communal. Guests share rooms with bunk beds, and the walls are famously thin, leading to a unique social dynamic where 'there are no secrets in the chalet.' While this can be a drawback for light sleepers, it also fosters a sense of camaraderie among hikers. The chalet provides a communal kitchen for guests to prepare their own meals, and evening programs with hot drinks are a highlight. Reddit+2

Despite the basic amenities and thin walls, the unparalleled location and the historical significance of the chalet make it a truly special experience. It's a chance to disconnect from the modern world and immerse yourself in the raw beauty of Glacier National Park. Instagram+1

Planning Your Overnight Stay

An overnight stay at Granite Park Chalet requires meticulous planning due to the extreme demand for reservations. These bookings are highly sought after and typically sell out within minutes of becoming available online. Prospective guests must be vigilant, checking the official reservation portal precisely when new dates are released. Instagram+1

Beyond securing a reservation, packing is crucial. As this is a backcountry lodge, all your supplies must be carried in on foot. This means prioritizing essentials: lightweight clothing layers, sturdy hiking boots, a sleeping bag (or utilizing the offered bedding), food, water, and any personal items. Consider a comfortable backpack that can handle an overnight load. Instagram

Upon arrival, guests will find a communal kitchen for meal preparation and shared sleeping quarters. The chalet offers a unique opportunity to experience the wilderness without the need for camping gear, but it's important to manage expectations regarding privacy and noise due to the historic construction.
