We love egg day at the hatchery! 🐟🥚 We spoke with a couple of our hatchery team members about the process we follow when handling our eggs. Just like babies, we must carefully monitor each egg through the early process of their life. This may look like cleaning, measuring, and weighing the eggs. By following proper aquaculture practices, we can ensure that our fish are raised to the healthiest and...

Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! 🍭 This little 🥺🐢 is being raised at Warm Springs National Fish Hatchery as part of an effort to help keep gopher tortoises from becoming endangered. Baby gopher tortoises are most at risk from predators when they are small. Reviews Summary

Visitors find the Warm Springs National Fish Hatchery to be a peaceful and educational spot, perfect for a relaxed outing. Many appreciate the free admission and the opportunity to see various fish, turtles, and even an alligator. While some note the facilities show their age, the natural charm and conservation focus make it a worthwhile stop for families and nature lovers.

"A very nice place to see a fish hatchery near Warm Springs
Warm Springs is a very nice quaint town with a few things to see and do. We were lucky to have a harvest fair that was going on when we visited. We decided to see if a place we had visited before was open since it was during the government shutdown. The building was not open but the surrounding parts of it are accessible to the public. The Warm Springs Fish Hatchery is a quiet and peaceful place that feels a bit frozen in time but is still well worth a visit. You can simply stroll around the various ponds and see fish moving through the water while birds gather nearby. The wooden walkway, though showing its age, adds a rustic charm as it is positioned under trees and over a pond filled with fish, giving visitors a close-up look at the hatchery’s work. Informational signs along the concrete pond on the north side and along the walkway provide details about the fish and the history of the hatchery, making the visit both relaxing and educational. We visited years ago and found that it still has that same quiet appeal—a reminder of a time when places like this focused more on nature than on presentation. It’s a good stop if you’re in the area and want to enjoy an easy unhurried walk, learn something about fish conservation, and take in the sounds and sights of the outdoors."

"First trip here this Spring. Awesome as always. I love this place. I like looking at all the fish and watching the Gator grow. I also enjoy walking around the property. I didn't get a chance to do it this time but I also like to have lunch there. It's a really a special place."

The Gopher Tortoise Head Start Program

The Warm Springs National Fish Hatchery plays a crucial role in the conservation of the gopher tortoise, a species facing threats that could lead to endangerment. Through their 'head start' program, the hatchery provides a safe environment for young gopher tortoises during their most vulnerable first year of life. Instagram+1

These hatchlings are often rescued from precarious situations, such as being found on development sites or dug up by pets. By raising them at the hatchery for one to two years, they are protected from predators and given a better chance of survival. Once they reach a suitable size, they are released into protected Wildlife Management Areas, significantly boosting their chances of thriving in the wild. Instagram+2

This initiative highlights how National Fish Hatcheries contribute to conserving more than just aquatic species, demonstrating a commitment to a broader range of wildlife protection. Visitors can often observe these young tortoises, offering a unique glimpse into conservation efforts in action. Instagram

The hatchery's work is vital for maintaining healthy fish populations and supporting ecological balance. Informational signs scattered throughout the grounds provide valuable insights into the hatchery's history, the specific fish species they manage, and the importance of their conservation efforts. This educational aspect transforms a simple visit into a learning experience about aquatic ecosystems. Reddit

Beyond fish, the hatchery's commitment to conservation extends to other species, as seen with the gopher tortoise program. This holistic approach underscores the hatchery's role as a significant contributor to biodiversity preservation in the region. Instagram
