As I looked about me I felt that the grass was the country, as the water is the sea. The red of the grass made all the great prairie the color of wine-stains, or of certain seaweeds when they are first washed up. And there was so much motion in it; the whole country seemed, somehow, to be running.—Willa Cather, My Ántonia

Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the beautiful scenery and rewarding hikes at Mount Mitchell Heritage Prairie, particularly the stunning summit views and vibrant wildflowers. The historical context adds an enriching layer to the experience. However, some find the trail signage and lack of amenities like restrooms to be inconvenient.

"This place was beautiful and a good hike. I really enjoyed walking here. The history stuff was really cool to learn about too. The signage and trails were a little confusing on knowing where to go. It looks like they are currently in the process of doing some work and I'm hoping they make it a little clearer which route to take. Having distances would be nice too. That being said it's still beautiful and I totally recommend and will be back!"

Jeremiah Fischer

"I drove past the entrance twice thinking it was a farm's private drive so this is an easy-to-miss attraction.  As has already been mentioned by other reviewers there are no restrooms or trash cans and the road is a bit rough.  The hike however is well worth the trip.  You can get a nice view at the summit and feel the wind whip around you.  The Prairie also appears to be well-managed with prescribed burns and nicely maintained trails.

Great place for a fall hike."

"Hot, but breezy, nice overlook at the summit."
