Embrace the 'Tourist Trap' Charm

Wall Drug is a sprawling roadside attraction designed to lure travelers off I-90. Expect a unique, eclectic mix of shops, eateries, and quirky displays. It's a place to stretch your legs and embrace the kitsch, especially if you're heading to the Badlands.

Timing is Everything for Freebies

While the 'free ice water' is a classic draw, don't expect it to be ice-cold or in large cups. The real stars are the donuts and 5-cent coffee (or $0.99 in a to-go cup). Arrive with an open mind and be prepared for crowds, especially during peak travel seasons.

Wildest place on earth … Wall Drug in South Dakota. My friend @malreeder told me I have to go check this place out. I asked her what it was like, she just said it can’t be described, go see for yourself. Correct. It’s in the middle of nowhere, yet there were people everywhere. It took up at least one entire block, there was parking all the way down the street, and actual busses full of people pi...

Reviews Summary

Wall Drug is a quintessential roadside attraction, lauded for its unique, sprawling collection of shops, quirky displays like the jackalope, and classic free ice water. Visitors appreciate the variety, photo opportunities, and the nostalgic charm, though some find it a bit of a tourist trap with average food. It's a must-stop for many on a South Dakota road trip.

"Must see road trip stop.
A little or lot of pretty much everything.
Plenty of fun photo opportunities and areas to stretch legs from long drives.
Food is okay but not the reason for stop. Lines move very fast and organized chaos.
I'd save room for Ice cream or donuts (cake like texture)"

John Hoagland

"You have seen the signs, and you’re wondering if it’s worth the stop; and the answer is yes and no. It’s definitely a tourist trap, but the kids will think it’s awesome. The free ice water is more like tap water, there are a ton of souvenirs of all kinds, and even some reasonably priced t-shirts. The donuts are expensive; I posted a picture with the prices as of August 2025. They are big and rather tasty, but I wasn’t impressed with the icing. We were staying in Wall in order to visit the Badlands, so the drug store was nice to visit while in town."

Sharon Miller

"This rest stop on the way to Badlands National Park is advertised numerous times on I-90. They offer free iced water, but the cups are small and not cold enough, and the dispenser is a bit odd. We had dinner there, and the prices were reasonable. They also offer coffee, but the cups are small. The mall is large and sells various items, but it's cluttered. This mall supports the economy of the town of Wall. This time in Wall, many motorcycle enthusiasts participated in the 2025 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Legend of Free Ice Water

The iconic 'Free Ice Water' sign is perhaps the most famous aspect of Wall Drug. It was the brainchild of Ted Hustead, who started offering it in 1936 to entice travelers to stop. The idea was simple: offer a basic, free amenity to draw people in, hoping they'd then purchase something from the store. This simple yet effective marketing strategy is credited with transforming a struggling drug store into a massive roadside attraction. TikTokInstagram

While the water is still free, the cups are small, and it's often described as more like tap water than ice-cold refreshment. Nevertheless, it remains a beloved part of the Wall Drug lore and a testament to its enduring appeal as a classic American roadside stop. It's a piece of history that continues to draw visitors off the highway. Reddit

A Sprawling Collection of Shops

Wall Drug is far more than just a drug store; it's a sprawling complex that has grown to encompass over 76,000 square feet. It's a veritable village of retail and dining experiences. You'll find everything from typical tourist souvenirs, clothing, and gifts to more unique offerings like art galleries and even a chapel. Instagram

The sheer variety is part of its charm. Visitors can browse through numerous themed shops, each offering something different. This eclectic mix ensures there's something to catch everyone's eye, making it a place where you can easily spend an hour or more exploring. The 'organized chaos' is part of the adventure, with displays and items seemingly everywhere. Reddit+1

The Appeal of the Jackalope

The mythical jackalope, a jackrabbit with antelope horns, is a creature of Western folklore, and Wall Drug has embraced it wholeheartedly. Giant jackalope statues are prominent outdoor attractions, offering a fun and quirky photo opportunity for visitors. Instagram+1

These statues, along with various jackalope-themed souvenirs, have become synonymous with Wall Drug. They tap into the romanticized image of the American West and add a layer of whimsical charm to the roadside attraction. For many, encountering these larger-than-life creatures is a highlight of their visit. TikTok
