What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Van Patten Woods Forest Preserve for its serene atmosphere, beautiful Sterling Lake, and diverse recreational opportunities including fishing, kayaking, and walking. It's considered a great spot for picnics and enjoying nature, though some wish for more challenging hiking trails.
"Van Patten Woods Forest Preserve is an excellent place for a picnic, fishing, canoeing, biking and a tranquil walk. The wide gravel path is 2.5 miles around the beautiful Sterling lake. It’s shady with many trees and also nice and breezy.
They have nice private picnic areas right on the lake front along with a couple restrooms. It’s a great fun day out for families!"

"A beautiful place to go and walk in the summer and spring to get your calories up. I usually after work come here to get my 1000 cal for the day of walking cause I already walked about 500 cal at work so I finish off the 500 here and then go home. Beautiful site to see nice little walk not a lot of people there and a beautiful view of the lake very peaceful."

"It’s a special place. I have videos on my iphone of Canadian Geese flying in v formations overhead at a truly breathtaking angle that I cherish and watch all the time, The majesty of field sized v formations of geese overhead while beavers swim from their dams is a moment I’ve experienced. Sterling lake is so clean you can observe natural aquatic plant life sprinkled with the brilliant pan fish of North America. You can hike along the floodplains and as the seasons change watch a beautiful metamorphosis. Also its a big equestrian location which means large wide trails that are easy to walk and talk with groups of people no problem, it is very accommodating for everyone. My only wish is it had some natural footpaths with roots and boulders for those craving a more robust hiking experience, it is trully some gorgeous land that as a flood plain, fowl sanctuary and fishers delight overall really nice. There is a leash law so you do need to keep dogs leashed supposedly."
