What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the Blue Ridge Parkway Bedford section for its unparalleled scenic beauty and relaxing driving experience. The numerous overlooks offer breathtaking vistas, making it a top choice for touring and photography. While services are limited, the peaceful atmosphere and stunning landscapes are considered well worth the preparation.
"The Blue Ridge Parkway is the best motorcycle touring highway in the United States, in my opinion. It is the most challenging for sure (speed limit is 45 MPH). It doesn't have the twists and turns of the Tail of the Dragon or Twisted Sisters in Texas, nor the elevation of Mount Rainier, Glacier National Park, or Beartooth Pass. But it offers something that none of those rides can offer - 469 miles of absolutely breathtaking overlooks where you can see for miles and miles. Hands down it is the best ride in the United States for touring, relaxing, and taking in the most beautiful scenery in the country."

"Amazing ride. Avoid highways and take this road instead. Stop as often as you can."

"Great parkway and the trails were amazing! Highly Recommended!"

Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
Pack plenty of snacks and drinks, as services are scarce. Consider bringing a frisbee or ball to enjoy in the open spaces at overlooks. Look for visitor centers that might offer junior ranger programs or educational exhibits. Hiking trails with easy access and minimal elevation gain are ideal for younger children. Remember to check for any seasonal closures or advisories before your trip.
🏍️ Motorcycle Enthusiasts
Plan for frequent stops at the abundant overlooks to take photos and enjoy the scenery. Be aware that services like gas stations are infrequent, so ensure your tank is full before entering the Parkway. Check weather conditions as they can change rapidly in the mountains, and be prepared for cooler temperatures, especially at higher elevations. Many riders find the Parkway to be an ideal route for touring and soaking in the natural beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

The Art of Slow Travel on the Parkway
This philosophy of slow travel extends to the hiking opportunities available. Numerous trailheads branch off the Parkway, offering everything from short, accessible nature walks to more strenuous climbs. These trails provide a deeper connection with the environment, allowing visitors to experience the forests, streams, and mountain air up close. Planning your stops to include a short hike can significantly enhance your visit, offering a different perspective than the sweeping views from the road. Remember to wear appropriate footwear and carry water, as services are sparse.
Navigating Services and Amenities
Dining options directly on the Parkway are seasonal and limited. While places like the Peaks of Otter Lodge offer meals, they are exceptions. For a wider variety of choices, plan to visit towns adjacent to the Parkway, such as Bedford or Roanoke, before or after your drive. These towns provide access to grocery stores, cafes, and restaurants. Additionally, cell service is notoriously unreliable, so downloading offline maps and important information is highly advised.
