Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise Colossal Cave Mountain Park for its stunning natural formations, engaging and humorous tour guides, and the unique adventure of exploring underground. The surrounding desert scenery and horseback riding options also receive high marks. Some visitors note that the cave can be humid and recommend booking tours in advance.

"Go once, go twice & then keep going....each timecis,a new & wonderful experience! The beautiful surroundings get you first, the breeze whistling through the mountain top keeps you. Take a hike, find a bench & take in the Serenity. The landscape speaks to you in a very special tranquil way & it will keep you coming back. Have a seat at the cafe and enjoy a drink and a snack. I highly recommend Margaritas & the Jumbolicious Soft Pretzel. 😋 The gift store is definitely a place to check out. If you're lucky like me, you'll see Jeri there & she's not only helpful but informative. Yes, of course I made a few purchases in the store but Jeri convinced me that I really needed to take the Collosal Cave tour and was I glad I did. She gave me all the information I needed to sign up for a cave walk and I was able to sign up in the store with her too. I went to the cave entrance for my walk & was greeted by the very informative & entertaining Erik. He led our group through the cave, gave us lots of history and information about the cave & found a way to make us all laugh & took away the nervousness that some people had about being in a cave. If you have a question Erik has an answer...really enjoyed him as a guide !. So take the drive up the mountain, enjoy the views, take a tour, have a cocktail & take it all in...I promise you'll love the experience!"

"What a great experience! The staff at Colossal Cave Mountain Park were all incredibly friendly and helpful. I especially want to thank our tour guide, David. He did an amazing job sharing the history of the cave in a way that was both fun and educational. His passion and humor really made the tour memorable. We'll definitely be back!"

Jason House

"We really enjoyed our tour. Our guide Laure was great. Such a wonderful, knowable and lovely person. She puts so much energy into the tour and her “dad” jokes make it even better.

The cave is beautiful and the history of the native Americans, bandits, early “owners”, the CCC from the 30’s and even the vandalism from the 1800’s makes this tour really interesting. I highly recommend this tour. We had a great time. Thank you Miss Laure for making our experience really special!"

The History and Preservation of Colossal Cave

Colossal Cave is a significant geological and historical site, estimated to be around 80 million years old. Instagram It's one of the largest dry caves in North America, meaning water does not actively flow through it, preserving its formations in a unique state. TikTok The cave has a long history of human use, dating back to the Hohokam people who utilized it for shelter. Instagram Later, it became a hideout for bandits and was explored by early settlers. Reddit

In the early 20th century, the cave faced threats from vandalism, with visitors damaging its delicate formations. TikTok Fortunately, individuals like Frank Schmitt, a German immigrant who moved to Arizona in 1918, recognized the cave's value and worked to preserve it. TikTok His efforts, along with those of subsequent caretakers and the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the 1930s, were crucial in protecting the cave. Reddit Today, the park continues to focus on conservation, ensuring that this natural wonder remains intact for future generations to explore and appreciate. Reddit
