"A Forgotten Giant of Early U.S. Naval Power – USS Massachusetts (BB-2)
The USS Massachusetts (BB-2) was one of America’s first true battleships—commissioned in 1896 and serving through the Spanish–American War. As a pre-dreadnought, she represented a leap forward in naval design, with 13-inch guns, heavy armor, and a low freeboard ideal for coastal defense.
Though she didn’t see action in the famous Battle of Santiago de Cuba, she helped enforce the Cuban blockade and fired in support of land operations. Unlike later "blue water" warships, BB-2 was designed more for shore defense than extended missions.
After the war, she spent years as a training ship and was finally decommissioned and sunk as a target off Pensacola, Florida, in 1921. Her wreck still rests in shallow water and remains a destination for sonar imaging and the occasional dive.
This ship is a piece of steel history from a time when the U.S. Navy was transforming into a global force. While she doesn’t survive as a museum like her WWII namesake BB-59, BB-2 deserves her place in the story of American sea power."
