What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the stunning natural beauty of Upper Piney River Falls Trail, calling it a 'must-do' and 'top 3' hike. The scenic drive, Piney Lake, and wildflower meadows are major highlights. While the waterfall itself is sometimes described as underwhelming, the overall hiking experience and the breathtaking vistas are consistently praised. Some caution is advised regarding the rough road access and potential muddy conditions during snowmelt.
"Absolutely stunning and a must do when you are in Vail. I’ve hiked in Arizona, Utah, and Wyoming, and this hike is easily top 3. It’s a bumpy ride to the ranch so go slow and take your time. Once you arrive, it’s magic. There are several options as far as hikes, but my family and I did the 5.9 mile out and back that ends in a “waterfall” that was a bit underwhelming. But the hike to it was absolutely phenomenal. If you don’t want to hike, you can simply enjoy Piney Lake. They let you fish and canoe there. There is also a gift shop and a restaurant. Do it!!"

"I'm not sure why other reviewers said trail access isn't welcome at the lake, I never experienced this. Additionally, it was stated that there's no restrooms, also not true. So here's the review on the hike. We went during the snowmelt on June 26. There's a total of 3 switchbacks headed up and one from the summit of the hike down to the falls. There's no less than 20 small springs that you have to walk across. There's a decent amount of mud. Therefore waterproof hiking shoes should be a must at this time of the year. The trail isn't that heavily trafficked, but there's a decent amount of people. Dogs and children as young as 4 were seen on the trail. The views are amazing, however the waterfall was underwhelming in our opinion. If I had seen pictures I probably would have gone just for the best views which are from the start of the trail to the first switchback."

"Nice little hike but be prepared for a couple of rough spots. Springs and a few rock obstacles. Nice little cascading waterfall but you need to go off trail a bit to get the best views. The meadow part of the creek if full of trout."
