Reviews Summary

Visitors find the Desert Queen Mine trail offers a valuable historical perspective on Joshua Tree's mining past, with remnants of equipment and structures. While some find the natural scenery less captivating than other park trails, those interested in history appreciate the glimpse into a bygone era. The extended exploration can be rewarding for adventurous hikers, though caution is advised due to less-defined paths. Reddit

"The real draw of this particular hike is the historical element rather than the nature element. This relatively short, flat, and easy trail leads to an old abandoned gold mine. You can still see some of the equipment on site, but all the mine entrances and stuff like that is fenced off. I didn't really find the mine to be all that interesting, but if you're into old abandoned stuff you might like it.

As for the natural scenery on this trail, it was probably the least photogenic trail I saw in Joshua Tree (along with the Discovery Trail). If you're into history or you have multiple days in the park, by all means give this one a try. But if you're only here for a day or two and want a nice hike or natural scenery, you can do much better than this trail"

"The Desert Queen Goldmine is an easy hike from the parking area. Make this a destination while visiting Joshua Tree National Park to experience the historic mining from a bygone era in the California Desert. You can spend a few hours just exploring the mine works with all the extensive tunnels and shafts from the glory days of finding mineral wealth as a part of the American Dream. This is a fun hike for kids of all ages. Take the short walk to the mine overlook, or hike down into the wash and up to the ruins to see everything. There are trails that connect to Split Rock and Jumbo Rocks. Make sure you study the trials and have a map with you for the longer hikes. It is easy to become disoriented in the deep washes through the granite rock formations. You will enjoy discovering the Desert Queen Mine."

"Fairly short, poorly-marked trail to the mine. I’d recommend going if you’re bored in Joshua Tree and looking for a hike.

The mine’s themselves are closed, and covered with metal grates"
