On the Trail with Chris and Quill. Today we are exploring the Tumbled Rocks Trail that follows the western shore of Devils Lake. The trail is paved, relatively flat and approximately 1 mile long. An out and back hike should take about 45 minutes as it winds through boulder fields and offers great views of the lake. #driftlesswisconsin #travelwisconsin #devilslakestatepark #outdoorwisconsin #devi...

Escaped to Devil’s Lake State Park for the long weekend and it did not disappoint 💚🍃 We started with the Tumbled Rocks Trail — an easy lakeside hike with giant boulders and crystal-clear water just steps away. Then took on the East Bluff Trail, which kicked our legs a bit but wow... the views from the top were worth every step. Between the glacier-carved lake, towering quartzite cliffs, and peac...

"Devil’s Lake never disappoints!
We parked at the North Shore, played in the water for a bit, and then went for a hike. The trail we chose was perfect for kids—highly recommend for families! It was my children’s first time on a trail, and they said, “If this is what hiking is like, we want to do it again!”"

"Tumbled Rocks Trail is a perfect, family-friendly path along the west shore of Devil’s Lake. It’s paved, flat, and stroller-accessible, making it great for kids of all ages. There are plenty of benches and rest stops, so you can take your time and enjoy the beautiful lake views.
The scenery is stunning with lots of great photo spots, and the giant boulders near the water are fun for kids (and adults!) to climb on. It’s a gentle adventure without being boring — just the right balance.
The only downside is that some trash can be found along the trail — disappointing, but not enough to ruin the experience.
Overall, a relaxing and memorable trail that’s ideal for a casual walk, especially with kids. Highly recommend!"

"This is the first time trying out this trail and it was beautiful! We went early and started at the north shore and headed towards the south shore to try and make it to the pet swim area. Unfortunately we didn’t make it due to the heat and let our dogs access the lake in a different area. Our doggies loved it! Our whole adventure was approximately 1hr 52 min."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Geology of Devil's Lake

Devil's Lake State Park is a geological wonderland, shaped by the immense power of glaciers during the last Ice Age. The iconic quartzite bluffs that surround the lake are remnants of ancient sand dunes that were compressed and uplifted over millions of years. The lake itself is a remnant of glacial meltwater, filling a basin carved by the ice. The 'tumbled rocks' found along the Tumbled Rocks Trail are a direct result of glacial action, with massive boulders deposited and scattered across the landscape. Instagram

These geological features create a unique environment that feels almost otherworldly, often compared to mountainous regions rather than the typical Midwest landscape. The sheer scale of the rock formations and the clarity of the lake water are a testament to the powerful forces that shaped this region. Visitors often express awe at the dramatic scenery, which stands in stark contrast to the surrounding Driftless Area. Instagram+1

Understanding the geological history adds another layer of appreciation to the Tumbled Rocks Trail. As you walk among these ancient giants, you're literally stepping through millions of years of Earth's history, a truly humbling experience. The science behind the lake's formation is fascinating, with ancient rivers and glacial ice playing key roles in carving out the dramatic landscape you see today. Instagram
