Taughannock Falls via the Gorge Trail. This is a fairly low intensity hike with very shallow slow-flowing waters that feels calming to the ears. Thankfully it’s dog-friendly but advised not to try and swim or litter of course. Keep it clean. Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the Taughannock Gorge Trail for its ease of access, beautiful shaded path, and the awe-inspiring Taughannock Falls. Many highlight its family-friendly nature and dog-friendly policies. Some note that waterfall flow can vary, impacting the spectacle, and suggest checking conditions beforehand.

"Really enjoyable and easy walk! The wide path is almost fully shaded, which made it comfortable even at midday. It’s very dog-friendly too—my pup had a great time saying hi to everyone. The trail is about ¾ mile out and back, and at an easy pace it took us around 45 minutes. Along the way you’ll see beautiful mountain and tree views, plus a dried creek bed where people were walking (and even splashing in where there was some water). Since there hasn’t been much rain, the waterfall wasn’t flowing as strongly as we would have liked, but it was still a lovely spot.

Parking is $10 (credit cards accepted) and covers all NY State Parks for the day. We snagged a spot in the small main lot, but there’s also plenty of overflow across the street. The three porta-potties near the lot were impressively clean and upgraded."

"It is a wonderful place. We felt the energies of rocks. So ancient. So much history. The trail is very pleasant and easy. My 5 year old hopped both ways cheerfully. Take binoculars to watch falcons."

Iryna Pastavalava

"This is such a peaceful walk up to the falls. It’s 3/4 mile to the falls and a wide maintained gravel trail all the way. It’s mostly flat and a very easy walk. We stopped here and then made our way to downtown Ithaca for lunch."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Majesty of Taughannock Falls

Taughannock Falls is a true natural wonder, boasting a spectacular 215-foot single drop, making it one of the tallest waterfalls east of the Rocky Mountains and even taller than Niagara Falls. The sheer scale of the falls is breathtaking, especially when viewed from the base of the gorge. The surrounding gorge walls, carved over millennia by the Taughannock Creek, add to the dramatic scenery, with towering cliffs that evoke a sense of ancient power. Instagram+1

The volume of water cascading over the falls is highly dependent on the season and recent rainfall. For the most impressive and powerful display, plan your visit during the spring snowmelt or after significant rain events. During drier periods, the falls may appear more as a trickle, which can be a point of disappointment for some visitors if expectations aren't managed. Reddit

Despite the variability in water flow, the Taughannock Gorge Trail offers a consistently rewarding experience. The trail itself is a significant part of the attraction, providing an accessible and scenic journey to the base of this natural marvel. Instagram

Exploring the Taughannock Gorge Trail

The Taughannock Gorge Trail is the most popular route for accessing the base of Taughannock Falls, and for good reason. This 0.95-mile (one-way) trail is renowned for its ease of access and gentle gradient, making it suitable for nearly everyone. The path is wide, well-maintained, and primarily surfaced with gravel, ensuring a comfortable walking experience. InstagramReddit

One of the trail's most appreciated features is its ample shade, provided by the dense canopy of trees lining the gorge. This makes it an ideal choice for a midday stroll, even on warmer days. As you walk, you'll be accompanied by the soothing sounds of Taughannock Creek and the impressive geological formations of the gorge walls. InstagramReddit

While the primary destination is the waterfall, the journey along the Gorge Trail is an experience in itself. Keep an eye out for interesting rock formations, diverse plant life, and perhaps even some of the local wildlife. The trail is also dog-friendly, allowing visitors to share the experience with their leashed pets. Instagram

Beyond the Gorge: Rim Trails and Views

For a different perspective on Taughannock Falls and its surrounding gorge, explore the North Rim Trail and South Rim Trail. These trails offer elevated viewpoints that provide panoramic vistas of the waterfall and the expansive gorge landscape. They are generally more rugged than the Gorge Trail but offer rewarding scenery. Instagram

The South Rim Trail, in particular, is often highlighted for its stunning overlooks. From these vantage points, you can truly appreciate the immense height of the falls and the vastness of the gorge. These trails are ideal for photographers seeking different angles and for those who enjoy a more challenging hike with a grand payoff. Instagram
