Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise Cape Meares for its breathtaking ocean views, the unique Octopus Tree, and the charming lighthouse. The accessibility of the main viewpoints and the opportunity to spot wildlife are frequently highlighted as positives. Some note the steepness of the return walk from the lighthouse and the potential for limited lighthouse tour hours outside peak season.

"Cape Meares State Scenic Viewpoint and Lighthouse was a magnificent place to enjoy the views. It was interesting to be the same height as the light of the lighthouse since it was built at a lower part of the peninsula. The lighthouse and giftshop was closed for the winter season. If you played Life is Strange, when you start to walk back from the lighthouse, there will be a dirt trail to your right that leads out to a bench. That spot was used in the video game. From there, you can also spot the natural arches in the stone. It was very calming."

Nomad Life

"Awesome, awesome place! Absolutely breathtaking views. A short drive up the road to the paid parking lot and you will find yourself immediately met with wonderful views. Roughly paved walkways will lead you to even more breathtaking views, including that of the light house. I am not sure I would be able to do it, but I did see one group pushing someone in a wheelchair towards the lighthouse. So many viewpoints to checkout, with each one offering a bit of a different perspective. Additionally you can take a dirt trail up a bit to the restrooms, and even further up to see the Octopus Tree. Make the short drive form Tillamook and check it out!"

Ashley Rose

"This place is nothing short of absolute amazement! Prepare to walk allot, soak in all the nature, ocean views, beautiful lighthouse and huge trees that should wow you for sure. Definitely a must see!"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Enigmatic Octopus Tree

One of the most distinctive features of Cape Meares is the Octopus Tree, a massive Sitka spruce estimated to be 750-800 years old. Unlike a typical tree with a single trunk, this ancient specimen has multiple large limbs that grow horizontally from its base before curving upwards, creating a cage-like structure. Instagram+2

While some attribute its unique shape to natural conditions like extreme weather, it's believed that indigenous peoples in the area may have intentionally trained the tree into this unusual form. This practice, known as 'tree shaping,' was done for various cultural or practical reasons. Visiting the Octopus Tree is a surreal experience, offering a tangible connection to both nature's artistry and human history. Instagram

A short, accessible trail leads from the main parking area to the Octopus Tree, making it an easy addition to your visit. It's a popular spot for photos and a testament to the enduring power and mystery of the natural world. Reddit

Exploring the Cape Meares Lighthouse

The Cape Meares Lighthouse, built in 1887, is the shortest lighthouse on the Oregon Coast, standing at 217 feet. Its unique position on the cape means visitors often approach it from above, offering a different perspective than most lighthouses. Instagram+1

During operating hours, typically from 11 am to 5 pm in summer, you can tour the lighthouse and browse the gift shop. The interior provides a glimpse into the life of a lighthouse keeper and the technology used to guide ships. Be aware that climbing back up to the parking lot from the lighthouse can be steep, so take your time. Reddit

This historic landmark is not only a navigational aid but also a significant part of the Oregon Coast's maritime heritage. Its presence adds a romantic and historical dimension to the already stunning natural beauty of the viewpoint. Instagram
