Reviews Summary

Rock Fort Campsite offers a historically significant riverside experience, marking a key encampment for the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Visitors appreciate the peaceful atmosphere and connection to the past. However, recent parking changes necessitate a long walk, and some reviews mention concerns about site conditions and worn signage.

"This should be a 5 star because of the historical significance of the site. Lewis and Clark camped here using the cliffs as protection from the unfriendly Natives on the Oregon side. But they entertained Washington native Americans who canoed over to meet them. One of the members of the Corp of Discovery danced for them and according to Lewis and Clark’s journal they partied into the night. Unfortunately the city of The Dalles obliterated all the parking options here by building a 15’ wide bike/walking path where parking used to be. We were there on a 95 degree day and had to walk a long distance from a private gravel area in the heat. The kids lost interest by the time we arrived at the site. It had been one of their favorite stories about the Corp of Discovery but The Dalles evidently does not value the significance of this location. There are old, worn information boards there but if you cannot easily reach them what’s the point? Looks like The Dalles has gone the same way as Portland. Valuing walkers and bikers and ignoring drivers."
