Reviews Summary
Hayden Butte (A Mountain) is a popular, short, and steep hike offering rewarding panoramic views of Tempe and the surrounding valley. Visitors appreciate the quick workout and historical petroglyphs. However, some reviews mention concerns about trail maintenance and potential hazards, as well as parking challenges.
"Tempe Butte also known as A mountain is a short and easy hike — it took less than 30 minutes to reach the top! The trail isn’t too tiring, and the view from the summit is totally worth it. You get a great view of Tempe, ASU campus, and the surrounding area. It’s a perfect little adventure if you’re looking for a quick outdoor activity with a rewarding view."

"ASU and City of Tempe when contacted about the conditions of the trail, both blamed it on the other. Asu saying it's Tempe's issue and Tempe saying the mountain belongs to ASU so they can't fix it. There are many sections on the trail where hikers have created new trails because the official trail is in such bad shape. The hike itself is a nice hike and doesn't take too long. It just can be difficult for some because of the poor conditions of the trail. I seen numerous people twist, ankles and fall and hurt themselves because of the failure to maintain the trails."

"I love going to Tempe to do this hike, as it adds incline to my workouts. The only thing is….. parking. Parking is not always free and for the little time I spend here, it’s not worth the cost of parking. Other than that, it’s a pretty diverse area with tons of shopping a s restaurants."

The History and Significance of Hayden Butte
Archaeological studies suggest that people have utilized this area for thousands of years. The petroglyphs, some of which are estimated to be hundreds of years old, depict various symbols and figures, providing insights into the beliefs and daily lives of those who came before. The presence of these ancient carvings underscores the spiritual and practical significance of Hayden Butte to Native American tribes of the Sonoran Desert. Today, it stands as a testament to both natural beauty and enduring cultural heritage.
The management of Hayden Butte has been a point of discussion between ASU and the City of Tempe, with differing views on trail maintenance responsibilities. Despite these administrative discussions, the butte remains a beloved local spot for recreation and a significant historical site, drawing visitors interested in its natural features, cultural artifacts, and its iconic 'A'.
Navigating the Trails and Trail Conditions
These less-maintained sections can present challenges, including loose gravel, uneven surfaces, and potential tripping hazards. It's crucial for hikers to wear sturdy footwear, such as hiking boots or trail shoes, to ensure stability and prevent injuries like twisted ankles. While the hike is short, the steepness combined with potentially poor trail conditions can make it more difficult than it appears. Visitors are advised to stay on marked trails whenever possible to ensure safety and minimize environmental impact.
Despite the trail condition concerns, the reward at the top is widely praised. The panoramic views of Tempe, ASU, and the surrounding Phoenix metropolitan area are considered well worth the effort. For those seeking a quick outdoor adventure with a significant payoff, Hayden Butte remains a top choice, provided they are prepared for the terrain.
