Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the Tacoma Narrows Bridge as a beautiful landmark and an engineering marvel, especially on clear days when Mount Rainier is visible. The opportunity to walk or bike across the eastbound span is a highlight, offering stunning views despite the chilly winds. The historical context of 'Galloping Gertie' adds a unique layer of interest for many.

"This bridge is a beautiful landmark and hallmark within the United States, well worth the visit today with the mountain out!"

Thomas Brandt

"7/15/25 Get great views from the bridge. Can walk or bike across the eastbound bridge (the newest one). It is almost a 2 hour walk one way. A good place to park nearby that has a marked trail to the bridge is at War Memorial Park. It can be chilly from the wind while crossing over. The old bridge that collapsed in 1940 has an interesting history. Must watch the short youtube vid of "the swaying bridge". Looks crazy!
It is 5,979 feet long, provides 187.5 feet of clearance below for marine traffic and has four lanes on each bridge. Tolls are only collected on the Eastbound direction bridge."

Orrin H

"Loved every minute of this!! Walked it with a smile and with such glee! It's cold when you're on it with that magnificent breeze! I went during the end of April, and it led me to the War Memorial Park on the otherside!"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Legacy of 'Galloping Gertie'

The original Tacoma Narrows Bridge, nicknamed 'Galloping Gertie,' opened in 1940 and quickly became infamous for its dramatic collapse just four months later. The bridge's flexible design, intended to be aerodynamic, unfortunately led to aeroelastic flutter in moderate winds, causing it to sway violently before breaking apart. This catastrophic event was captured on film and became a pivotal moment in the study of structural engineering and aerodynamics. TikTok+4

The collapse served as a stark lesson, leading to significant advancements in bridge design and wind engineering. Engineers learned the importance of stiffness and damping in suspension bridges, ensuring that modern structures like the current Tacoma Narrows Bridge are built to withstand far greater forces. The story of 'Galloping Gertie' is a powerful reminder of nature's forces and the continuous evolution of human ingenuity. TikTok+1

Today, the two modern bridges stand as a symbol of resilience and engineering prowess. While the memory of the original bridge lingers, the current spans are a testament to how lessons learned from failure can lead to greater success and safety in construction. Visitors can appreciate not just the views, but the history of innovation that made these structures possible. TikTok
