What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the unique floating experience in the Great Salt Lake and the chance to see buffalo on Antelope Island. However, be prepared for potential issues with gnats, brine flies, and limited or non-operational shower facilities, making bug spray and water shoes essential.
"We had a blast at Bridger Bay Beach!
Floating in the salt water was a highlight for our young kids. If you're willing to step outside of your comfort zone, and ignore, feeling a little gross when you get out of the water, this is definitely a highlight! One of the favorite trips our families has gone on in the area.
A few important notes:
1. The water is not working, so we weren't able to clean off after we got out of the water. This was probably the biggest downside because of all the gnats and brine shrimp in the water. You feel very gross after you get out of the water.
2. We went on a hot day with no wind. There were billions of gnats on the shoreline. I think for most people, this would make the experience very gross. My daughter convinced us to quickly make it through the gnats to get into the water. After about 15 ft. past the shoreline in the water, there were only a few gnats, and we had a lot of fun!
3. Bring bug spray!
4. Bonus! We got to see all the buffalo nearby (about 10-minute drive from the beach on the east side of the island)"

"We had to visit salt lake to cross it off of our list to say we've done it. However the public showers are down as well as the bathrooms. Long walk to the water with rocky sand so water shoes or shoes are highly recommended. The brine flies are crazy and there are dead birds everywhere."

"Absolutely recommend, one of the most beautiful places ive been. But oh god wear bug spray if you are going during bug season. Billions I mean billions of mosquitoes."

The Unique Experience of the Great Salt Lake
Visitors often describe the feeling as being 'supported' by the water, making it a relaxing and unusual way to spend time. While traditional swimming is challenging, the floating aspect is the main attraction. It's important to note that the lake is home to brine shrimp and brine flies, which can be present in large numbers, especially near the shore.
Planning for the salt water involves bringing plenty of fresh water to rinse off as much as possible and considering water shoes for the rocky, salt-encrusted shoreline. The visual landscape of the lake, with its vastness and shimmering surface, is also a photographer's dream, especially during sunrise and sunset.
Wildlife Encounters on Antelope Island
When visiting, it's crucial to maintain a safe distance from the bison. They are wild animals and can be unpredictable. Never attempt to feed them or approach them closely. Binoculars or a telephoto lens are recommended for observing them safely.
Beyond the bison, the island is also a haven for various bird species, especially during migration seasons. Keep an eye out for pronghorn, deer, coyotes, and a variety of waterfowl. The unique ecosystem of the Great Salt Lake supports a diverse range of life, making Antelope Island a fantastic destination for nature enthusiasts and photographers alike.
Navigating the Shoreline and Amenities
Regarding amenities, it's important to be aware that restrooms and showers may not always be operational. While the park is working on improvements, visitors have reported that these facilities are sometimes out of service. If you plan on showering after your visit, it's wise to check the current status beforehand or be prepared for paid shower options. Packing wet wipes and extra towels can be helpful for a quick clean-up.
Buggy conditions are another factor to consider, particularly during warmer months and on windless days. Gnats and brine flies can be abundant, making bug spray an essential item to pack. Despite these challenges, many visitors find the unique experience of floating in the Great Salt Lake well worth the minor inconveniences.
