What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise Antelope Island State Park for its breathtaking scenery, abundant wildlife (especially bison), and sense of peaceful escape. The drive across the causeway and the panoramic views are frequently highlighted as magical. While the sulfurous smell of the Great Salt Lake and the presence of biting gnats in warmer months are noted drawbacks, they are generally considered minor inconveniences compared to the overall stunning natural beauty and authentic wild experience.
"Antelope Island State Park completely exceeded my expectations. The moment you drive across the causeway, the view of the Great Salt Lake on both sides is just stunning. It feels peaceful and untouched, like you’re entering a different world. I saw bison, antelope, and even a few coyotes roaming freely, which made the whole experience feel wild and authentic. The island is huge, so it never felt crowded even though there were other visitors.
We hiked up to Buffalo Point and the views were incredible—mountains, water, and open skies all around. The visitor center had helpful staff and interesting displays about the history and wildlife. I also really enjoyed the Fielding Garr Ranch on the south side of the island. It was quiet, beautiful, and gave a glimpse into life from over 100 years ago.
Be prepared for bugs in the warmer months, especially near the water, but that’s part of being out in nature. Bring water, sunscreen, and maybe a picnic—you’ll want to stay a while. This is the kind of place that makes you slow down and appreciate the outdoors. I’d highly recommend it to anyone traveling through northern Utah. Five stars, no doubt."

Absolutely Stunning and Worth the Visit!
🦬Antelope Island State Park is a hidden gem just outside of Salt Lake City and absolutely worth the $15 entrance fee. The park offers incredible scenic views, peaceful trails, and an unforgettable wildlife experience. Driving across the island was magical—wide-open skies, reflective lake views, and a feeling of total escape from the city.
One of the most memorable highlights was getting to see bison up close! They roam freely, which adds a thrilling and authentic touch to the adventure. The hiking and horseback riding trails are well-marked and suitable for all levels, and the park also features a historic home that adds a bit of cultural charm.
There’s also a unique Dark Sky Experience tour available for stargazing, which I plan to try next time. The facilities were clean, and the entire experience felt peaceful and uncrowded.

Wildlife Wonders: Bison and Beyond
Beyond the bison, the park is home to pronghorn antelope, deer, coyotes, and a variety of smaller mammals. The shores of the Great Salt Lake also attract a diverse population of waterfowl and migratory birds, making it a paradise for birdwatchers. The causeway itself is often a prime location for observing these feathered inhabitants.
Wildlife viewing is most rewarding during the cooler parts of the day, typically early morning and late afternoon, when animals are more active. Always be prepared with binoculars and a camera to capture these unforgettable encounters.

Horseback riding is another popular activity, with opportunities to explore the island's diverse terrain on guided tours or with your own horse (check park regulations). The park also features the historic Fielding Garr Ranch, offering a glimpse into the island's past and a peaceful spot for reflection.
Remember to check the park's official website for trail conditions and any closures before your visit. Always carry sufficient water, wear appropriate footwear, and be mindful of the weather, which can change rapidly in this high-desert environment.
The Great Salt Lake Experience
While swimming in the Great Salt Lake is possible due to its extreme salinity, it's not a typical beach experience. The water is dense, and the lakebed can be muddy. Instead, visitors often enjoy the scenic beauty, the unique reflections at sunrise and sunset, and the birdwatching opportunities along its shores.
