What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the Warden's House Museum for its informative guided tours, fascinating historical exhibits on local industries and the Civil War, and its surprisingly cool interior due to limestone walls. The exceptionally low price is a major draw, offering great value. Some visitors have noted inconsistent experiences with volunteer guides.
"It was such a great and informative tour. We went on a very hot and humid day, and the house was very cool inside. When we walked in, we thought they had updated it with air conditioning, but we're told the coolness was because of the limestone walls.
If you are into history or local history, I definitely recommend going and doing the tour. They have a lot of neat things that have been saved over the years from family members that are in the museum. The first pop-up toaster was invented by a man from Stillwater! We had a lot of fun, even our young daughter enjoyed it."

"We have done two different tours of the Warden's House Museum. Standard tour is very interesting and gives lots of information about the history of the area and the prison and several notable inmates as well as the families of the wardens who lived here. The artifacts offer a great historical picture of the area from 1850's to mid 1900's. Flashlight tour is offered in the weeks leading up to Halloween in October. We just did the flashlight tour. In total darkness with only flashlights, the house takes on a more sinister vibe. The house is decorated with many more spooky artifacts all throughout, and the tour focuses on the more tragic stories of the prison and the families who lived....and died here. The flashlight tour included several areas of the house and grounds not included in the regular tour.
I would highly recommend both tours!"
