Can you believe this was an old mining town? . . 📝 This loop hike is about seven miles and takes you through the historic Blue Heron mining community. A lot of great history but also great hiking! This trail is in my top five for the state for all its great features and impressive moments like views of the waterways, places to swim, crack in the rocks, and several great mossy moody areas. Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the Blue Heron Mining Community for its unique 'ghost building' concept and rich historical narratives, offering an educational and immersive experience. The scenic train ride and natural surroundings are also highlights. However, some note accessibility challenges due to steep terrain and the potential for closures of key attractions like the Tipple Bridge.

"We went on a Monday so the bookstore/gift shop was closed. Wednesday through Sunday you can take a train ride from Stearns. We drove but word of advice there is almost zero cell service and it has some steep inclines on way there and back. The park itself has recordings at different displays of mining camp life and is easily self directed. Has ample parking and restrooms were large and clean."

"Awesome place to hike and to learn about the history of the mine. Great educational experience for the whole family. And it's free!"

Debra Jorgensen

"Wow, this place is impressive with the interactive displays in all the “ghost buildings”. If you are interested in reading and hearing the history of the this place; there is certainly much information to discover. This was well thought out and a lot put into this. It is open to the public year around although the bookstore and concession is not. The pathways are again Mobility Scooter friendly even up the bridge. The bridge is a must, the views are amazing. There are picnic tables and a few grills if you are looking to bring your own food/cook."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The History of Blue Heron

The Blue Heron Mining Community, also known as Mine 18, was a bustling coal mining town that operated from the early 20th century until its closure in the 1960s. It was part of the larger Big South Fork coalfield, a region rich in natural resources that fueled industrial growth. The community housed miners and their families, creating a self-contained society with homes, a commissary, and other essential services. The abandonment of the mine led to the gradual decay of the town, leaving behind a fascinating historical site.

Today, Blue Heron is preserved as part of the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area. The National Park Service has meticulously recreated the footprint of the original buildings using a 'ghost structure' approach. These skeletal frameworks, combined with interpretive signs, audio recordings, and historical artifacts, allow visitors to imagine the daily lives of the miners and their families. This immersive approach makes it a unique outdoor museum, offering a tangible connection to the region's industrial past. InstagramReddit

Exploring the 'Ghost Buildings'

The most striking feature of the Blue Heron Mining Community is its collection of 'ghost buildings.' These are not original structures but rather outlines and frameworks built on the original foundations, indicating where homes, the commissary, and other community buildings once stood. Each site is equipped with interpretive panels and audio stations that play recordings of former residents sharing their memories and experiences. This allows visitors to step back in time and gain a vivid understanding of the community's social fabric and daily routines. Reddit

Walking through these spectral structures is a poignant experience. You can visualize the layout of the town, imagine families gathering, and hear the echoes of a bygone era. The interactive displays are particularly engaging, offering insights into the challenges and camaraderie of mining life. It’s a powerful way to connect with history, making Blue Heron more than just ruins but a living testament to the people who lived and worked there. InstagramReddit

The Big South Fork Scenic Railway Experience

For a truly memorable arrival, consider the Big South Fork Scenic Railway. This heritage railway offers a picturesque journey through the rugged beauty of the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area, culminating in a stop at the Blue Heron Mining Community. The train ride itself is an attraction, winding through forests and along scenic waterways, offering a glimpse into the natural landscape that shaped the region's history. Instagram+1

Arriving by train provides a unique perspective and can be a more relaxed way to reach the site, especially if you're concerned about navigating the steep roads. Once at Blue Heron, you can disembark and explore the historical exhibits. The railway operates on a schedule, typically from Wednesday to Sunday, and booking tickets in advance is recommended, particularly during peak tourist seasons. It’s a fantastic option for families and history enthusiasts alike. Instagram+1
