"Out of shape and first time hikers review March 2019:
Basics
Trail starts just east of Payson. Parking is doable with most vehicles, depending on weather. It gets hot during the day and water sources may be very scarce. Hike is difficult because of the rough trail and multiple elevation changes. Saw only 2 other hikers.
Story
Eight 20-40 year olds from Phoenix with skill ranges from complete beginner to semi experienced but out of shape. One person weighed every piece of gear to stay under weight while another brought an 8 lb folding chair and a 30 pack. We packed for 2 nights. Made it onto hellsgate ridge and a half mile into the canyon. Found a great camping spot about 5 miles into the hike and with a close creek for filtering water. Had a very hard time hiking and fishing at the bottom. Worth the 3 day experience. Everyone lived."

"I've never entered the wilderness from this trail.
2002,
I entered from south end of Gisela Az. Having stayed at a small section of Tonto forest on westside of creek. Had to wait just shy of 2 weeks, for the creek to lower enough to cross. There are very few humans, water is scarce. I spent, off and on, 3 months in there! Some of the animals you will encounter have never been exposed to ppl!!
!! MY MOST AWESOME ADVENTURE!!"
