Reviews Summary

Reviews for SoundWaters Coastal Center are mixed, with some visitors praising the educational aspects and the dedication of the staff and interns. However, significant concerns have been raised regarding the water quality in the surrounding marina area and the perceived welfare of the aquatic animals housed at the center, prompting questions about animal husbandry practices.

"How can you let kids go into water so dirty that people get infections from open cuts that are exposed to it? Why is it okay for poor kids who are mostly kids of color to swim in water that most middle-class folks wouldn't go near? You are endangering the health of every child you allow to swim in the Stamford marina/Bocuzzi beach area. If you wouldn't let your own kids swim there, don't sacrifice anyone else's."

"The people were very nice and the interns, but I was a mom on one of the trips last summer and it really concerned me that they had a flounder at the petting station? Fish have that slime coat that they teach us at aquatic husbandry is very harmful to touch at all which is their immune response, then to see little kids pressing hard and rubbing the fish frantically and you could see the pain it was in. Second the tank the founder was held in was so sad, I’m guessing less then 10 gallon? They have a huge lobster in maybe a 10 gallon and it’s so big that it’s claws actually are out of the water but they don’t have him in a bigger tank. When we were also there they let the kids touch an injured horseshoe crab with a hole in the top which kids stuck their fingers in and then I found out it died that day. I am very concerned what else happens behind the scenes for these animals. The kids will now think it’s ok to touch a fish and their slime coat and to keep fish in small tanks. I’m not blaming the workers because maybe they weren’t trained properly, but it does make me question the treatment of these poor aquatic fish we are trying to be saving and respecting. I would love to give this place a 5 star if it could be addressed, thank you."
