Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the unique combination of hauntingly beautiful ruins and the chance to see wild horses roaming freely. The undeveloped nature of Cumberland Island is a major draw, offering a peaceful escape. However, the lack of amenities requires thorough preparation, and some find the ferry logistics a bit challenging.

"Highly recommended. The island does not have stores or access to water or food. If you go to the island read about going first! This place is beautiful and has wild horses. You can catch the fairy to the island from downtown St. Marys.
Watch out for snakes!"

Nefritara

"Core memory unlocked.

Many decades later, I still remember coming here as a child. It was a joy to bring my own children here while visiting Amelia Island recently. Everything leading up to visiting Dungeness makes for lasting memories but Dungeness is, of course, the crown jewel in that cluster of memories. I highly recommend reading up on it before you visit to know to look for different unique ruins around the main house."

Wes Widner

"Queue the horses! But really, it was way cool to not only catch the wild horses on Cumberland Island, but right at Dungeness Ruins.

We took our bikes to get around the island quicker and were able to trek further than if we'd just been on foot. Overall it's a cool bucket list kind of thing to do if you are in the area since it's the last of the undeveloped barrier islands on the SE coast."
