This isn’t Tolomato Cemetery. It’s actual Public Burying Ground/Huguenot Cemetery. It was locked. Both Historic cemeteries I went to were locked. Because they’re historic, according to one of the tour guides I stopped. Which, being from New England, sounds ludicrous.. . . . . . . . . #graveescapes #graveescapespod #history #cemetery #burial #burialstories #forgottenhistory #newengland #podcast #hi...

Reviews Summary

Visitors find Huguenot Cemetery to be a beautiful and tranquil historical site, offering a poignant glimpse into St. Augustine's past. While some appreciate its aesthetic and historical value, others note that it can be locked, limiting access. The cemetery is also known for its unique tombstones and a reputation for being a 'haunted' location.

"Ever since I was 12 years old I've had an affinity for old graveyards. Far from creepy I think they are quite beautiful tranquil places full of the beauty of past life even if in some cases it might be bittersweet is the reminder of the fleeting nature of life. Aesthetically it is a wonderful old graveyard. I took some pictures of my cat on the outskirts of it. I wouldn't dream of bring her inside for the photos in my opinion that would be a bit disrespectful."

Loetz Collector

"This old cemetery was set aside in 1821 to bury Huguenots, which were basically non-Catholic people. We learned there are far more bodies than tombstones as families were losing members so quickly during the yellow fever epidemic that multiple people were often buried in a single grave. An interesting spot to visit."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

A Brief History of Huguenot Cemetery

Established in 1821, the Huguenot Cemetery served as the first public cemetery in St. Augustine after the American takeover. It was primarily designated for Huguenots, a term broadly used for non-Catholic Protestants. The cemetery's history is deeply intertwined with the city's struggles, particularly the devastating yellow fever epidemics. Instagram

During these outbreaks, the mortality rate was so high that multiple individuals were often buried in a single grave to accommodate the rapid loss of life. This practice means that the number of bodies interred here far exceeds the number of visible tombstones. The cemetery's design and layout reflect the urgent needs of the time, with many graves marked simply or not at all. Reddit

Today, Huguenot Cemetery stands as a poignant reminder of St. Augustine's past. It's a place where history whispers through weathered stone and the quiet dignity of remembrance. Visitors often find it a beautiful and tranquil spot, offering a unique glimpse into the lives and challenges of early St. Augustine residents. Reddit

Navigating Cemetery Etiquette

Visiting a cemetery like Huguenot requires a mindful approach. Cemetery etiquette is paramount, emphasizing respect for the deceased and their resting place. This means maintaining a quiet demeanor, refraining from loud conversations or disruptive behavior. TikTok+2

Physically, avoid touching headstones, monuments, or any grave decorations. These are often fragile and can be damaged. Climbing on or sitting on tombs is also discouraged. If you choose to leave an offering, ensure it's something appropriate and respectful, like flowers, and avoid anything that could be considered litter. TikTok

Social media creators often share tips on respectful cemetery exploration, highlighting the importance of treating these sites as historical and spiritual places. Understanding and adhering to these guidelines ensures that these historic grounds can be appreciated by future generations. TikTok+3
