Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the serene beauty of Square Top Lakes, often highlighting it as a peaceful alternative to the crowded Mount Bierstadt. The stunning alpine scenery, clear lakes, and lack of crowds are frequently praised, though some note the challenging uphill climbs and the need for preparedness due to high altitude and exposure.

"Beautiful and serene lakes just below Square Top Mountain. It was a great place to relax and soak our feet after summiting. I would say the upper lake is moderately tafficked (on the weekend) and it was a pretty moderate hike; mostly gradual uphill. The trail was dry as of July 2018."

Katie Fritchen

"Peaceful once you get to the upper lake as the crowds thin out. Yes some tough uphill climbs but that mean restful downhill portions as well. Trail this last weekend in great shape only a little muddy."

Shane Davis

"Killer hike opposite Mount Bierstadt trailhead. All in this was a highlight of my recent trip to Colorado. The best part of this hike is the lack of people. Bierstadt is busy. This side you will not run into the crowds. I just went to the lakes which was a 5 mike hike round trip. Pretty easy with a few steep spots. The views were spectacular. I only went to the lakes as I was starting late in the day but I am sure the peak would offer amazing views less all the people!"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Navigating Guanella Pass

Guanella Pass Road is a scenic byway that connects Georgetown and Grant, Colorado. It offers access to numerous hiking trails, including the popular Mount Bierstadt and the less crowded Square Top Lakes Trail. The road is paved for the most part, making it accessible for most vehicles. However, it's a mountain road with switchbacks and can be prone to closures during winter months due to heavy snowfall. Always check road conditions before your trip, especially during shoulder seasons. The trailhead for Square Top Lakes is located at the summit parking area of Guanella Pass, making it a convenient starting point for your alpine adventure. Instagram+1

Parking at the Guanella Pass summit can be extremely limited, especially on weekends and during peak season. Arriving early in the morning is highly recommended to secure a spot. If the main lot is full, there may be limited overflow parking further down the road, but it's best to plan for an early start. Consider carpooling with friends to maximize parking availability. Instagram

Beyond hiking, Guanella Pass offers opportunities for scenic drives, picnicking, and enjoying the high-alpine environment. The pass itself is a destination, providing stunning views even if you're not embarking on a long hike. Remember to practice Leave No Trace principles to help preserve the natural beauty of this area for future visitors. Instagram

The Allure of Alpine Lakes

Square Top Lakes are a prime example of Colorado's stunning alpine lake scenery. These glacial lakes, situated high above the treeline, are characterized by their crystal-clear, often icy waters and the dramatic mountain peaks that surround them. The hike to these lakes offers a rewarding experience, with the payoff being the serene beauty of the water reflecting the rugged landscape. Instagram+1

Many visitors are drawn to the idea of taking a dip in these pristine lakes. While the water is undeniably cold, even in summer, it can be a refreshing and invigorating experience. Some brave souls even venture out in late fall or early spring to witness ice skating on the lower lake. Instagram+1

The lakes are also a fantastic spot for photography. The interplay of light on the water, the textures of the surrounding rocks, and the vastness of the sky create endless photographic opportunities. Whether you're capturing a wide panorama or a close-up of the water's surface, the lakes provide a picturesque subject. Instagram

Understanding Trail Difficulty and Altitude

The Square Top Lakes Trail is rated as moderate, but it's important to understand what that means at high altitude. The trail involves a steady uphill climb, with some steeper sections, covering approximately 4.6 to 5 miles round trip and gaining between 600 to 1000 feet in elevation. Instagram+3

The trailhead itself sits at an elevation of around 11,200 feet, and the lakes are even higher, reaching up to 12,400 feet. This means you'll be hiking in thin air, which can affect your stamina. It's crucial to be aware of altitude sickness symptoms, such as headaches, nausea, and dizziness. If you're coming from a lower elevation, consider spending a day or two acclimatizing in Denver or a nearby mountain town before tackling this hike. Instagram

Being fully exposed above the treeline means you'll be susceptible to sun exposure and wind. Always wear sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses. Layers are essential, as temperatures can change rapidly. A windbreaker is highly recommended, even on a sunny day. Instagram+1
