This landmark in Springfield, Illinois contains the remains of Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States. Mary Lincoln (also buried here) almost decided upon Chicago or Washington, D.C. for her husband's remains, but honored Abe's wishes for a spot in a quiet cemetery on the north side of Illinois' capital. #History #documentary #president #lincoln #historytok

It was an honor to serve breakfast for the “Saluting The Branches” event- Springfield National Cemetery. Local Arborists come together for one day and volunteer their time, resources, and equipment to honor our Veterans by making their final resting places beautiful and safe for their loved ones to visit. Interesting fact: The stone wall surrounding the cemetery is 200 years old!

"Had the honor of walking through Springfield National Cemetery this morning. Sometimes you need to walk and reflect on the history of where you are and those who have lived it to understand where and who we are. Well kept and very respectful resting place for our military members and their spouses. I enjoyed the history of the area included in the cemetery and their website was very helpful in learning more about this place and those who call it their final resting place. Office that provides site locations and a public restroom located just inside the front gate."

"My brother, a VN Marine Vet, was buried here in 1980. I was living in Alaska at the time and attended the funeral, but was not here when the headstone was set, and years passed before I was able to visit the National Cemetery. The cemetery grounds are very nice, but when I later saw my brother's stone, I was almost certain the rank was incorrect. Years passed and then in a visit of about 3 - 4 months ago, I happened to encounter Josh, who is in charge of the cemetery, and asked him if there was any way the rank could be corrected. It took some time but after going through many boxes of old family papers I found brother's DD214 and took that to Josh, who immediately sat down at his computer and completed / submitted the paperwork to have a new, corrected stone cut. THANK YOU THANK YOU JOSH. YOU HAVE MADE THE FAMILY'S DAY WITH THIS ASSISTANCE."
