Reviews Summary

Deerlick Creek Park is praised for its excellent rock hunting opportunities and the scenic beauty of the creek meeting Lake Michigan. However, visitors note the very rocky terrain requires appropriate footwear, and parking can be limited. Some also mention confusion regarding dog policies.

"This is a small place, but it suited our needs as we didn't want a long hike to a beach, but wanted to rock hunt a little. Do not look for anything fancy. As the report of john's and one picnic table, but there's enough beach for kids enough rocks for the most avid rock hunter. And enough areas to provide shade for those that want it."

M Theresa Brown

"We chose this park because it was listed as Dog friendly. When we arrived there where signs posted saying no dogs on beach. It had originally been dogs allowed on leash but at some point it was changed and not updated here on Google.
Also when the reviews say it’s rocky, the mean you can’t hardly walk with out tripping or stubbing your toes. Definitely bring hard bottom water shoes if you plan on going in the water. The creek is nice but just as rocky only you can see them."

Ashley Hanna

"This is a pretty beach but limited parking. One place online said Dog were welcome but when we got there no dogs allowed. I wish there were more dog friendly places."

The Allure of Rock Hunting

Deerlick Creek Park is a rock collector's paradise. The beach is densely covered with stones, making it a prime spot for finding unique geological treasures. Avid hunters often seek out Petoskey stones, Michigan's state fossil, known for their distinctive hexagonal patterns. The creek bed itself also offers a wealth of interesting rocks, though they can be more challenging to navigate due to their uneven placement. Remember to bring sturdy footwear, as the terrain is quite rugged. Reddit

Beyond Petoskey stones, visitors can find a variety of other rocks, including chert, granite, and quartz. The shifting sands of Lake Michigan occasionally reveal remnants of the past, adding an element of surprise to any rock-hunting expedition. The 'City of Green Bay' shipwreck, lying just offshore, adds a layer of historical intrigue to the area, though it's only visible under specific conditions. TikTok

For the best rock-hunting experience, consider visiting after a storm, as the waves can churn up new finds. Always be respectful of the natural environment and pack out anything you pack in. The sheer abundance of rocks makes Deerlick Creek Park a consistently rewarding destination for anyone who enjoys the thrill of discovery. Reddit

Navigating the Rocky Terrain

The defining characteristic of Deerlick Creek Park is its rocky shoreline. This isn't your typical sandy beach; instead, expect a landscape covered in stones of all sizes. This makes it an ideal spot for rock collecting but requires careful footing. Visitors are strongly advised to wear water shoes or sturdy closed-toe footwear to protect their feet from sharp edges and to navigate the uneven ground comfortably. Reddit

The creek itself is also rocky, and while it offers a pleasant place to explore, the same caution applies. The water can be shallow near the shore, but the rocky bottom means wading requires attention. Many visitors find that the effort is well worth it for the unique experience and the chance to find beautiful stones. Reddit

While the rocky nature might deter some from sunbathing or extensive beach games, it creates a more natural and less crowded atmosphere. It's a place for exploration, discovery, and enjoying the raw beauty of the Lake Michigan coastline. TikTok
