"Standing as the oldest structure on Solomons Island, the Chesapeake Biological Laboratory's visitor center was constructed around 1780 and once served as the home of Isaac Solomon - the Delaware-born namesake of the island that built the largest oyster cannery on the Chesapeake Bay.
Over the several hundred years that the building has stood, many alterations have been made, including the addition of an exterior gate and internal purpose and safety modifications.
The building was acquired by the Chesapeake Biological Laboratory in 1994 as part of a land parcel and is now used as a visitor center that focuses on exhibits of the laboratory's work, provides profiles on the attending scientists, and is a source of information on the role and importance of the local marine landscape."
