Locals call Sheep Mountain "Sleeping Indian" on account of its supine shape. Get up close and personal on a hike in the Gros Ventres, which will take you straight to his rather impressive "belly." #jhdreaming #optoutside

Reviews Summary

This hike is lauded for its incomparable Teton views and vibrant wildflower meadows, offering a truly rewarding experience for those who conquer its challenging terrain. While the initial overgrown section and potential for disappearing trails above treeline require preparation, the breathtaking summit vistas make it an unforgettable adventure for experienced hikers. Reddit

"My wife and I enjoyed hiking the trail, we decided to hike on the first snow day Sept 10th. The beginning of the trail was wet tall grass laying down which we were soaked all the way through. This meant we never dried out all the way to the top where it was blowing and 30degrees. Through all of it we sure had a heck of an adventure."

Tim “Jhcowboy68” Brooks

"This trail is a fun one! Be prepared to hike through overgrown trail for the 1st mile or so to the wilderness boundary. Farther on through the forested sections there are some deadfall to climb over. Above tree-line the trail dissipates, but it is clear which direction to go. Around 11 miles round trip from upper lot.
This hike has incomparable views of the tetons and beautiful, colorful, meadows. Certainly a day hike for experienced outdoors people!"

"Not an easy hike (4000ft vertical), but amazing views as a reward"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Navigating the Trail Above Treeline

Once you ascend above the treeline, the marked trail for Sleeping Indian Sheep Mountain can become faint or disappear entirely. This is where navigation skills become paramount. Hikers often rely on cairns (piles of rocks) left by previous trekkers, but these can be dislodged or hard to spot in poor visibility. It's highly recommended to carry a map and compass or a GPS device with the trail downloaded. Pay close attention to the general direction of the summit and use landmarks to orient yourself. Reddit

Experienced hikers suggest looking for the most logical path upwards, often following ridgelines or natural breaks in the terrain. Don't be afraid to backtrack if you feel you're going off course. The reward for mastering this section is the unobstructed, breathtaking panorama that unfolds as you approach the summit. Reddit

Safety First

Always inform someone of your hiking plans, including your expected return time. Be prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions, which can significantly impact visibility and make navigation more challenging. Instagram

Preparing for the Elements

The weather on Sleeping Indian Sheep Mountain can be notoriously unpredictable. Even on a warm summer day, the summit can be windy and cold, with temperatures dropping significantly. Visitors have experienced everything from intense sun to sudden snowstorms, even in early September. Therefore, layering your clothing is essential. Start with moisture-wicking base layers, add insulating mid-layers like fleece, and top it off with a waterproof and windproof outer shell. Instagram

Beyond clothing, sun protection is critical. The high elevation means stronger UV rays, so a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen are non-negotiable. Don't forget to protect your lips as well. Hydration is also key; carry more water than you think you'll need, as dehydration can set in quickly at altitude. Reddit

Footwear Focus

Your footwear choice is crucial. The initial mile of the trail is often described as wet and overgrown, with tall grass that can leave you soaked. Waterproof hiking boots are highly recommended to keep your feet dry and comfortable throughout the trek. Good ankle support will also be beneficial on the rocky and uneven terrain, especially as you ascend. Reddit

The 'Sleeping Indian' Legend

Locals have affectionately nicknamed Sheep Mountain the 'Sleeping Indian' due to its striking resemblance to a figure lying on its back. This unique geological formation is a defining characteristic of the mountain and a point of interest for visitors. While the summit offers incredible views, appreciating the mountain's distinctive shape often requires viewing it from a distance. Instagram

The 'belly' of the Indian is said to be a particularly impressive feature, accessible via the hike. Understanding this local lore adds a layer of cultural appreciation to the physical challenge of the climb. It's a reminder that mountains are not just geological features but also hold stories and significance for the communities around them. Instagram

Visualizing the Shape

When planning your visit, try to find photos or descriptions that highlight the 'Sleeping Indian' profile. This will help you appreciate the name and the natural artistry of the landscape as you approach or depart the area. Instagram
