What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors enjoy the unique and adventurous nature of the Hummingbird Trail, particularly the graffiti-covered cave with swings and the scenic views. However, the trail's lack of clear markings and steep, unshaded path require careful preparation and hydration.
"It's a fun trail with a fairly steep incline that does involve some scrabbling. The route is not clearly marked. There are assume arrows and other rock art along the way so follow that as best as you can.
The cave itself is covered in graffiti, rope and had some fun tchotchkis in there along with a few swings.
It would be a nice place to hang out with a book, some sandwiches and a cold lemonade.
There is no shade on the trail so be aware of weather, temperature and wind. Bring plenty of water, a hiking pole of you have one, gloves if needed and a hat. Please pack in pack out."

"This is a no nonsense trail that climbs steeply from the parking area for lofty views of Simi Valley, with numerous rocks and caves along the way. Some wildflowers, numerous birds and lizards. Traffic noise from the freeway on certain parts of the trail (hence the 4 rating). Otherwise, an interesting trail."

"I only went as far as the swing cave which was a 2 mile round trip. Follow the markers left by others to get to it. When I went it was purple spray paint dots and arrows. The cave is cool to hangout in and enjoy the view and sounds. Park on Kuehner Drive."

The Unique Cave Experience
While the graffiti might not be for everyone, it contributes to the trail's reputation as a 'secret spot' and 'hidden gem' in the Simi Hills. The cave offers a sense of discovery and a departure from typical hiking experiences. It's a testament to the trail's unofficial, community-driven character, where visitors leave their mark and create a unique destination. Remember to respect the space and practice Leave No Trace principles, even in this unconventional setting.
Navigating the Trail and Safety
Given the lack of shade and the steep climb, proper preparation is essential for safety. Visitors are strongly advised to bring plenty of water, wear a hat, and use sturdy hiking shoes with good grip. The sun can be intense, and dehydration is a real risk. For those who use them, a hiking pole can provide extra stability on the steeper sections. It's also important to be aware of the weather conditions and wind, especially if you plan to visit during hotter months. The review mentions traffic noise from the freeway on certain parts of the trail, which is something to be aware of.
