Reviews Summary

While currently closed due to fire, the Mount Wilson Trail is a beloved, albeit challenging, hike offering breathtaking views. Visitors praise its rewarding summit vistas and the scenic beauty of its waterfalls. However, be prepared for intense black biting flies and the strenuous nature of the long ascent.

"The Mt. Wilson trail is closed for the foreseeable future due to the Eaton fire. It is not safe to enter. Thanks to all the volunteers diligently working to fix this historic trail!

When the trail is open again: you can climb all the way to the summit of Mt Wilson, about 17 miles round trip, over 5,000 of vertical climbing. I don’t recommend taking a dog all the way to the top, but there are other worthy stops along the way if your dog is in good condition and is trained in navigating single track trails."

"I like the Mount Wilson hiking trail. I have come here a couple of times. I actually found this hiking trail on google Maps 3D. I was searching for a high peak mountain to hike up on google Maps 3D years ago. When I was younger and ignorant, I went here with just a bottled water, thinking I could get to the top in like 1 hour 😅. I thought it was a piece of cake. And I did hike for more than 2 hours or more, and I didn't find the end to the hike. I did not feel tired, but I was getting hungry. And I found some nice hikers who gave me some snacks to eat. So I went back down. Because I was crazy to come here with just a bottled water 😅.
I hope it gets open soon.

Now I noticed it's still closed as of July 5, 2025."

"Beautiful views. We started at the top of the 7ish + mile trail from the entrance of the observatory down to the park and other end of the trail head. Pretty easy going down obviously but challenging going up. Or I assume it is. :). We turned around about a quarter of the way down. Just that short part back up had us both huffing but if you're in shape you can do it and will be rewarded with wonderful views of Downtown L.A. and several valleys."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Strenuous Ascent: Hiking Mount Wilson

The Mount Wilson Trail is renowned for its challenging 17-mile round trip, demanding over 5,000 feet of elevation gain. This is not a casual stroll; it's a serious hike that requires good physical condition and mental preparation. Many hikers opt to tackle only a portion of the trail, such as the trek to the First Waterfalls, which still offers rewarding scenery and a good workout. TikTokReddit

For those aiming for the summit, expect a full day's adventure. The trail winds through varied terrain, offering glimpses of the urban sprawl below and the natural beauty of the San Gabriel Mountains. It's a journey that tests endurance but rewards with spectacular views and a profound sense of accomplishment. TikTokReddit

Key takeaway: Proper training and realistic expectations are vital for enjoying this demanding hike. Consider your fitness level and plan accordingly, whether you aim for the summit or a shorter segment. Reddit

Navigating the Black Fly Menace

A significant concern for hikers on the Mount Wilson Trail, particularly between Orchard Camp and the summit, is the presence of black biting flies. These insects can be relentless, especially when the sun is out and temperatures rise. Many visitors report being swarmed, making it difficult to take breaks or fully enjoy the experience. Reddit

To combat this, protective clothing is highly recommended. This includes long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and a hat to cover exposed skin. Some hikers have even resorted to wearing a bug net over their head and face for maximum protection. While bug spray is a common deterrent, its effectiveness against these specific flies can be limited. Reddit

Pro Tip: Planning your hike for cooler parts of the day or cooler seasons might help mitigate the fly issue. Always check recent trail reports for current conditions regarding insect activity. Reddit

Canine Companions on the Trail

Dogs are often seen on the Mount Wilson Trail, and many owners enjoy sharing the experience with their furry friends. However, it's crucial to assess your dog's capabilities. The 17-mile round trip with significant elevation gain is a substantial undertaking for any animal. TikTokReddit

For shorter excursions, like a hike to the First Waterfalls, dogs in good condition and accustomed to single-track trails can often manage well. Always ensure your dog is leashed, well-hydrated, and capable of handling the terrain. Be mindful of the heat and the potential for encounters with wildlife. Reddit

Important Note: While dogs can be great hiking partners, the full ascent to Mount Wilson's summit might be too demanding for most. Prioritize your dog's safety and well-being when deciding how far to go. Reddit
