What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors are consistently amazed by the sheer scale and geological wonder of Mammoth Cave, often describing it as a must-see natural attraction. The Shoshone Ice Caves and Bird Museum offer a unique, albeit quirky, experience with its lava tube and extensive taxidermy collection. While the cave tours are highly praised, some find the Shoshone museum's pricing a bit high for the offerings.
"Good place to visit to see artifacts and fossil. We didn't care much about the taxonomy but found many interesting artifacts like Indian blades and arrows, also dinosaur fossils among the displays. The places can be overwhelming for animal lovers but if you ignore all the taxonomy, there are many other interesting items hidden in between. The staff was very friendly. We didn't expect to see peacocks and emus so those were very cool. Recommend the cave visit during summer as the temperature inside could be around 38 degrees. The admission fee include rental lanterns so no need to bring your torches. The cave has a maintain walkway with railing but could be hard for those with knees issue."

"An interesting and authentic place to visit. There are two small museums with stuffed animals and exhibits, as well as a farm with peacocks and ostriches. The cave is long, unlit, and quite atmospheric. A guide provides lanterns, and you explore the cave on your own — the trail is fenced, so everything feels safe. Walking through the cave takes about 8 minutes. It’s cold inside, so be sure to bring warm clothes. The location is just 1.5 miles off the highway, and definitely worth the visit."

"This is an interesting place to see - the lava tube is huge. This is a completely unguided tour; you're essentially walking through the lava tube in a roped off area. At some point the tour area ends, and you turn around to walk back. The person at the register provides you with a really great lantern, so you don't need to bring a flashlight or a headlamp.
I'd say $15 for this unguided walk through of a lava tube is a bit much. I think they probably justify charging that much because they're allowing you access to the lava tube AND the taxidermy "museum," but being real with you -- no one is stopping for this attraction to see poorly taxidermied animals. I think if they charged $10pp, it would be a more reasonable fee.
There are peacocks that wander around outside, and there are a couple emus that are kept outside.
The only bathrooms provided for visitors are a few porta potties outside. We thought it would have been nice to be able to use a restroom inside, and avoid baking alive inside a poop box in the baking sun."

Exploring the Depths: Mammoth Cave Tours
When choosing a tour, consider your physical fitness and interest. The Historic Tour is a great introduction, showcasing significant historical features and formations. For those seeking a deeper dive, tours like the Frozen Niagara Tour highlight stunning calcite formations, while Fat Man's Misery and Mammoth Dome offer unique geological features. Remember that booking in advance is crucial, as tours frequently sell out, especially during peak seasons.
Above ground, the park offers hiking trails, scenic overlooks of the Green River, and opportunities for wildlife viewing. The Green River Ferry provides a charming way to traverse the river and access different parts of the park, operating since 1934 and serving as one of the few rural ferries still in operation.
Shoshone's Unique Attractions: Ice Caves & Natural History
Complementing the ice caves is the Shoshone Bird Museum of Natural History. This museum houses an extensive collection of taxidermied animals from around the world, including fish, fowl, game animals, reptiles, amphibians, dinosaurs, and sea creatures. While some visitors find the taxidermy itself to be the primary appeal, others note that the museum also contains interesting local history exhibits, antique farming and ranching collections, and various artifacts like Indian blades and arrows. The grounds also feature peacocks and emus wandering freely, adding to the unique atmosphere.
While the experience is described as interesting and authentic by many, some visitors feel the admission fee of $15 is a bit steep for the unguided lava tube walk and the museum's taxidermy focus. However, for those seeking an offbeat attraction with a mix of natural wonder and eclectic exhibits, the Shoshone Ice Caves and Bird Museum are a memorable stop.
