Cathedral Rock is a challenging hike, extremely small trailhead parking lot, yet super crowded spot for sunset all in one! It’s crazy how much this place exploded in tourism over the years! #visitarizona #arizonasbest #ig_arizona #azstateparks #keepnaturewild #wildkeepers #sedona #sedonaarizona #sedonahiking #sedonaaz #cathedralrock #optoutside #seekitfinditsendit #southwest #igsouthwest #folk...

Bring plenty of water, especially on warmer days. The hike is strenuous and exposed. Reddit

📸 Go for Golden Hour

Sunset and sunrise offer stunning light for photos, but expect more people. Reddit

Cathedral Rock is one of the more popular locations in Sedona. It could be the vortex, it could be the relatively short yet challenging hike, or it could be the amazing views the whole way up. But maybe it’s all three😊🏜 🥾This is a steep hike. We suggest wearing proper hiking shoes with good traction. 🚱no water at the trailhead 🚮Please respect the lands by leaving no trace 📍 Video taken on Yavap...

Reviews Summary

Cathedral Rock is a must-do for its stunning, iconic red rock views, but be prepared for a strenuous climb involving significant rock scrambling. While the hike is short, its difficulty is often underestimated. Visitors rave about the breathtaking panoramas and sense of accomplishment, though some find the crowds and challenging sections daunting.

"The third trail of the day for us, this was well worth it! It was fairly well marked with rock baskets. A few scrambles and one slightly ridiculous–to–navigate, foothold/handhold-less crevice. I was a little worried about the crevice for the way back, but it was actually really easy. Getting up into it was the hardest part. See pictures.

I was there to hike, but I did see someone on a mountain bike on an adjacent trail. I am posting a map.

There was a family there with five kids, I would guess between the ages of five and nine. Everyone seemed pretty happy, so I’m guessing they didn’t lose anyone over the cliffs at the top. I can’t say that I would recommend taking a group of kids in that age range up, myself. Especially not that many of them!

It was a fairly fast hike, lasting about two hours round-trip with a good 10 to 15 minutes spent at the top."

"Cathedral Rock Trailhead – Stunning but Strenuous!

We knew Cathedral Rock was going to be beautiful, but we didn’t realize just how challenging it would be! It’s definitely more of a climb than a traditional hike — there are sections that require scrambling up rocks and using both hands. That said, the views are absolutely breathtaking and 100% worth the effort. The towering red rock formations, the sweeping vistas, and that sense of accomplishment at the top made it unforgettable. Just be prepared: wear good shoes, bring water, and take your time. It was harder than we expected, but we’d do it again in a heartbeat!"

"Cathedral Rock Trailhead in Sedona is absolutely stunning! The views are breathtaking from start to finish. It’s not a long hike, maybe took us under an hour. But every step is filled with gorgeous scenery that just keeps getting better. We stopped often to take pictures because the photo ops are endless, especially near the top.

What we really loved was how there were plenty of flat areas along the way to take a break, enjoy the view, and catch your breath.

This trail is a must if you’re in Sedona. It’s manageable, memorable, and gives you that iconic red rock experience without taking up your whole day. Highly recommend!"

Unlike a typical hike, this trail involves significant rock scrambling, where you'll need to use your hands and feet to navigate steep sections and crevices. The trail is marked with cairns (rock piles), but it's still important to stay aware of your surroundings. The climb is strenuous, and while it's relatively short in distance (about 1.5 miles round-trip), the elevation gain and technical sections can make it feel longer. Be prepared for a workout! Reddit

Many visitors find the final crevice to reach the saddle to be the most daunting part, but reviewers often note it's easier to navigate than it looks. Taking your time, finding good handholds and footholds, and helping others can make the ascent manageable. The reward at the top is immense, offering unparalleled views that make the effort entirely worthwhile. Reddit

For those concerned about the difficulty, consider the Sedona Shuttle as it can alleviate parking stress, allowing you to focus on the hike itself. Always check weather conditions before you go, as rain can make the slickrock extremely hazardous. Reddit
