"FROM LIWINEDAD.BLOGSPOT.COM We here on Long Island pay some of the highest taxes and sometimes wonder what we get in return. One place that I can see my tax dollars going, and for a good reason, is the park behind my house. I took an early morning stroll to capture all the pictures before most people showed up as this is a busy and well-used town park. It is well maintained, and except for too many geese sometimes, it is a beautiful place to play. In addition to the Canada Geese are Egrets, Cormorants, Quaker Parrots, Hawks and now Bald Eagles. The Parrots are an invasive species, and they have taken over the park, building Parrot Condominiums in most trees and the tops of stadium lamp poles. However, nature does have a way of compensating for this invasion. We now have large blackbirds returning to the park and breaking into the Parrott condos to enjoy some eggs for breakfast. In addition, the raptors are returning, circling overhead, and diving down to capture a green feathered lunch. On one occasion, a large Hawk sat on our back fence, carefully eyeing the dinner menu. It is amazing how large these birds are.
There is a 1 ½ mile trail around the entire park that includes exercise stations. Sometimes you need to look up as seagulls drop clams onto the trail to break them open and eat them, but this adds a bit of charm to the place. The Park has many soccer pitches, baseball fields, lacrosse fields, pee wee baseball fields, kiddie park, and sprinkler pool. There is even a set of solar panels to help offset the administrative offices' power needs. My favorite is the fishing pier which is a great place to catch the sunrise. The Park officially opens about 08:00 AM (but you can walk in sooner) and is usually busy till 9 or 10 at night as most of the fields have lots of lighting. It is a lovely hidden gem on the south shore of Long Island and returning a good value for our tax dollars."

"A "pickleball" palace! With at least a dozen courts, there is always plenty of opportunities to play. And, public restrooms at armslength make visiting SNP a comfortable choice. Plus it's free!"

The Story of the Boat Basin
Today, the boat basin has transitioned into a viewing pond. While the rental boats are no longer present, it remains a picturesque spot within the park. It's a place where visitors can enjoy the scenery, observe aquatic life, and reflect on the park's evolving recreational offerings. It serves as a reminder of the park's past while still contributing to its present-day charm.
A Haven for Diverse Wildlife
However, the park also hosts an invasive species: the Quaker parrot. These colorful birds have established a significant presence, building nests in trees and on lamp poles. While they add a unique visual element, their impact on the local ecosystem is a topic of discussion. Interestingly, the return of larger blackbirds and raptors suggests nature's way of adapting and maintaining a balance, with blackbirds raiding parrot nests and hawks preying on the parrots.
The park's proximity to water also means you might encounter seagulls, sometimes observed dropping clams onto the trails to break them open. This natural behavior, while a minor inconvenience for some, adds to the park's wild character. The ongoing interplay between native and invasive species makes Seaman's Neck Park a fascinating place for nature enthusiasts and photographers alike.
Sports and Recreation Hub
Beyond field sports, the park excels in individual and dual sports with its dedicated tennis courts and a remarkable number of pickleball courts. The pickleball facilities, in particular, are a major draw, with many courts ensuring ample playing time for enthusiasts. For younger visitors, a well-equipped playground and a sprinkler pool provide fun and engaging activities during warmer months. The park's commitment to diverse recreational offerings ensures there's something for everyone, from competitive athletes to families seeking outdoor fun.
