What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise LaCroix Recreation Trail as a hidden gem with stunning overlooks and excellent wildlife viewing opportunities, particularly for birdwatchers. However, ongoing construction can sometimes detract from the experience, and some offshoot trails can be challenging.
"This is an absolute hidden gem. Recommend going on a weekend or before 7a to avoid heavy machinery on trail—looks like they’re adding a road along RR. I walked past no grief.
Once past construction, follow trail up and to left. Seems seldom used but surprisingly not overgrown. Trail takes you too bluffs on right. Immaculate spot. Can take gap in bluffs to right for good rock canyon. Or, just past gap, scramble off to right for stellar overlook of wetlands.
Great for scenic rocky area, great for wildlife viewing with scope. I’m a birder and this was my first Black Crowned Night Heron in MO. Came out of the shrubbery to catch a fish bigger than its head then slinked back into the shadows."

Navigating the Trail and Its Hidden Gems
Once you move beyond the immediate construction area, the trail becomes less manicured but remains surprisingly navigable. This is where the real adventure begins. Keep an eye out for a gap in the bluffs on your right; this leads to a fascinating rocky canyon that feels like a hidden world. Even if you don't enter the canyon, the bluffs themselves offer excellent vantage points.
For those seeking truly stellar views, a scramble off to the right just past the canyon gap will reward you with a remarkable overlook of the wetlands. This is a prime spot for appreciating the local ecosystem and is highly recommended by visitors who have explored these less-obvious paths.
Wildlife Encounters and Birdwatching Paradise
To maximize your chances of wildlife viewing, it's recommended to visit during the quieter hours of the day, ideally early in the morning. This is when animals are often most active and less disturbed by human presence. Bringing binoculars or a spotting scope can greatly enhance your experience, allowing you to observe birds and other wildlife from a respectful distance without causing them stress.
The trail's varied terrain, from bluffs to potential wetland edges, creates diverse microhabitats that support a healthy ecosystem. This makes it a valuable location for both casual nature observers and dedicated wildlife photographers looking to capture unique moments in their natural environment.
